Twice the Legend
Raúl González Blanco will always be remembered as a legend as a player for Real Madrid, whom he was with for 20 years, and the Spanish national team for which he has 44 goals in 102 games. But lately, his exploits with Tenerife are prompting suggestions that he will be remembered in the future for his managerial ability as well.
Tenerife shocked the football world earlier this year when they signed Raúl as their manager. And ever since, Raúl has been shocking the football world with his managerial ability. He started his reign at Tenerife by bringing in winger Albert Crusat on loan from Wigan. He then gave his side a boost in experience and quality by signing veterans Asier del Horno and Francisco Yeste.
Probably much sooner than he had expected, Raúl had a emotional reunion with his former club Real Madrid in the fourth round of the Copa del Rey. Tenerife were soundly beaten in 3-0 in the home leg, but their league form suggests only that bright times are ahead. In the first half of the season, Tenerife have won 16 out of their 18 games, drawing one and losing a lone game to league runners-up Salamanca. On the basis of their current form and their five point lead at the top of the Segunda Division B, they are the shoo-in favourites to win promotion as well as the league title.
With clubs in La Liga and top leagues in the rest of Europe losing patience with their respective managers, the former Spain international is being linked to several bigger clubs. He has recently stated that he is happy at Tenerife and not looking to leave, but the media will not stop speculating as long as this great run of results goes on. Tenerife fans will hope that he keeps his word and stays, but only time will tell what the future holds for Raúl.
