Inter Beat Bayern to Make Semifinals

After defeating Bayern Munich 1-0 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Inter Milan traveled to Germany to take on the Bavarian giants in the away leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. Last season these two sides had met at this exact same stage, and the corresponding fixture at the Allianz Arena ended 4-4; we could only hope for such excitement once again.
The opening exchanges were mainly in midfield; neither team could really garner extended periods of possession. Slaven Bilić's men were very well set up and their two lines of four often frustrated the more enterprising Nerazzurri midfield; Inter were limited to strikes from distance. Neuer easily collected long hits from Insigne and Poli.
As the sides approached half time, some pundits were wondering why Die Bayern, down a goal, hadn't pushed forward yet; evidently they were looking to keep the scores level during the first half before pushing on the second period. The Bavarian side was thrown a major blow, however, 6 minutes from time.
Brazilian attacker Philippe Coutinho slashed the ball onto his right foot and whipped in a cross from the left. Diminutive striker Lorenzo Insigne (5'4", no less) had made a hard near post run and nodded the ball into the back post, leaving Neuer stranded to watch the ball float in. Inter now led 2-0 on aggregate and Bayern needed 3 goals to advance due to the away goals rule.
5 minutes after the break, Inter
should have killed off the tie. Insigne was the instigator once again as he used his quick feet to burst past Jerome Boateng in the box. The hulking German cannily shoved down the through-on-goal striker from behind, leaving the referee no choice but to show him red and point to the spot.
Adam Maher stepped up to take the penalty and hit it hard and true to the bottom corner. Unbelievably, Manuel Neuer found a way to shoot across the goalframe like a bullet and bat away Maher's thunderous effort to keep Bayern in the two-legged quarterfinal.
The 10 men of Bayern Munich struggled to form any real attacks after being reduced to fewer men, but late, late on, the match sprung to life once again. With just 2 minutes left in regular time, Gabriel Torje picked out Bastian Schweinsteiger in the box with a delightful cross, leaving the German international to jink past ter Stegen and give Bayern a faint glimmer of hope.
The German side continued to pour everything forward but it was Inter that concluded the scoring deep into injury time. Lucas Digne sent fellow fullback Gino Peruzzi off to the races with a long ball and the Argentine defender ran the ball down quickly. Peruzzi then cut his way past two defenders and Neuer before dribbling the ball into the goal to kill off the game.
"Obviously this was not an easy game for us, but we responded very, very well to this pressure," said Inter manager Giuseppe Bergomi. "I am proud of the lads in this victory, and now we want to keep winning matches and win this tournament again."
Inter Milan have drawn Manchester United in the semifinals while Arsenal will play Manchester City in the other tie. Shockingly, there are 3 English teams left alongside the defending champion Italians.
