Inter Lift Coppa Italia After Derby Triumph

The first and only time Inter faced Milan in the Coppa Italia final was 1977, and on that day the Rossoneri ran out 2-0 victors. This time, though, everything has changed; players, managers, form. Everything but one thing: the passion of the rivalry.
Going into the 2017 final, 40 years after the last, most people expected Inter to run out champions and lift the trophy for the fifth consecutive time. Nobody can doubt that anything can happen on derby day, and that goes twofold for a cup final. The entirety of the Stadio Olimpico in Rome was ready to host this epic match to finish the Italian domestic season.
Just two minutes into the match, it already looked like it was decided.
The Nerazzurri had the kick off and didn't give away possession, quickly and sharply moving the ball up the field and getting into their usual passing rhythm in and around the box. It was a rather innocuous ball wide to Sterling from Andrea Poli, but the Englishman suddenly exploded into life. Sterling dashed past Didac and hammered the ball into the near post, giving Inter a 1-0 lead without Milan touching the ball even once.
Twenty minutes in, it seemed as though Milan had equalized. Alejandro Gomez's long distance free kick was excellently nodded home by Didac, only for the goal to be chalked off for offside. Just two minutes later, however, Didac was on the opposite end of the spectrum when he passed the ball out of defense straight to Adam Maher. The Dutchman made no mistake with his finish, and Inter were up 2-0.
Approacing halftime, the Nerazzurri were thoroughly in control. However, they chose not to leave anything to chance and in fact tripled their advantage. Lucas Digne broke down the left before whipping in a ball for his men in the box. Ademilson rose and struck but saw his header bounce off of the bar. Lorenzo Insigne, however, was quickest off the mark, and poked home the rebound into the empty net to make it 3-0.
In the second half, Milan barely mustered an attack. In fact, had it not been for Alexandre Pato's heroic clearance off the line, Emerson Luiz's header would have made it 4-0. Giuseppe Bergomi's men easily held on to their three goal lead and the match ended with confetti and celebration as Inter won their fifth straght Coppa Italia by beating the Rossoneri 3-0.
"There was never any doubt, was there? I'm very pleased Ernesto [Valverde] is back in charge of AC Milan; more easy wins for us," claimed a smug Bergomi after the match. "It's almost a foregone conclusion now; we are the best team in Italy."
