Bergomi Replaces Agger as Danish Captain

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger.

Today there was surprise around the Danish footballing world as new Denmark national team manager Giuseppe Bergomi replaced long standing captain Daniel Agger as captain, replacing him with William Kvist and demoting Agger to vice captain. Press around Denmark have both criticized and praised the decision, saying that Agger's experience at Liverpool made him the obvious choice. Bergomi, however, quickly defended his choice.

"Daniel [Agger] has not been in the best form for Liverpool and has not demonstrated to me his ability to lead. One can see this clearly in Liverpool's shock relegation last season. William [Kvist], however, has always shown his leadership and professionalism throughout his career. I think he can help us play to the best of our abilities."

The decision comes just a day before Bergomi's first game in charge of Denmark and in charge of any international team. There is a great level of excitement about the Danes, who hope that the talented ex-Italy international can lead their young team to glory, much as he has done with Inter.

Great update once again :) Keep it up!

Denmark vs. Slovenia (Friendly)

Ray Hudsen (RH): Welcome to the Parken, here in Denmark, where new Danish manager Giuseppe Bergomi will be in charge of his first international game in a friendly against Slovenia. Many people are very excited to have the talented Inter boss also taking charge of the Danes, and today will be their first taste of his international ability. Let's look at the starting lineups.

Phil Schoen (PS): Bergomi has chosen to use his favored narrow tactics with Denmark, but he has decided to play with two playmakers and one central striker. Eriksen and Anderson will be key to today, and as will William Kvist, the new captain. The ex-captain, defender Daniel Agger, starts the match on the bench. Looks like we are set for the kick, and here we go, Denmark attacking to the right.

19' PS: Here's Lucas Anderson, the talented young midfielder. Nice ball out wide for Juelsgard, who has some space for a cross.
RH: Good ball, Helenius...WHAT A GOAL! MAJESTERIAL VOLLEY FROM NICKLAS HELENIUS!
PS: First real chance of the game, and its been taken by the FC Twente striker! 1-0 to Denmark!

32' RH: Here comes the Real Madrid superstar, Christian Eriksen, surging down the center. He's drawn defenders to him, and he's slipped in Juelsgard out wide.
PS: Juelsgard...WHAT A SAVE! It's Bergomi's Inter keeper,Samir Handanovic, who makes a brilliant reaction save to keep the game close!

HT' PS: It's been a good half of football from Denmark who have dominated every facet of the game thus far.
RH: You have to give Bergomi credit, his 3 central midfielders and 2 attacking midfielders have utterly dominated the game. Slovenia have hardly had a sniff of the ball, and Lucas Anderson and Christian Eriksen have beasted the front line. We'll be back for the second half in a few.

50' PS: Eriksen on the ball yet again for Denmark, he pings it into Helenius in the box. One touch layoff to Poulson...
RH: Another brilliant save from Samir Handanovic! Jakob Poulsen with a wonderful strike first time, and the Slovenian goalkeeper was scrambling to keep it out!
PS: The gloves of Samir Handanovic are all that is keeping this game as close as it is!

86' RH: It's bobbled around in the box here a bit, Cornelius gets a head to it and nods it down to Jorgenson.
PS: He's seen Handanovic off his line, goes for the chip...WHAT A GOAL! Jorgenson scores from nearly 40 yards out!
RH: Great vision and technique to catch out a keeper of Handanovic's caliber, and now surely it is safe for Denmark! 2-0!

FT' RH: And it's all over here at the Parken, and Giuseppe Bergomi takes home his first ever win as Denmark manager in his first game in charge. It was a convincing performance from the Danes who dominated the match and allowed not a single chance to Slovenia.
PS: Thanks for joining us, see you next international break for action with the Danish national team!

Danish star Christian Eriksen celebrating the team's win.

Match Review

I am very pleased with how we played today. We dominated the midfield with the same tactical setup as Inter, and Eriksen and Anderson truly controlled proceedings. Helenius looks a top class striker as well, and could keep Bendtner out of the side. If we continue like this, especially our defensive prowess we showed today, we will be a very competitive side in the Euros in 2016 and possibly even the World Cup in 2018!
Congrats on the win, hopefully you'll be world champions soon! :P

Denmark's European Championship Qualifying Group

Group D
Denmark
Estonia
Israel
Finland
Kazakhstan

The top two from the group will qualify for the Euros, while the third placed team will play in a playoff with other third placed teams to qualify. Many people consider Denmark heavy favorites to win the group, and second place is wide open. Many people are surprised at the number of low ranked teams, though it will give smaller nations a chance to play in the Euros.

Giuseppe Bergomi told the press, "I think we have to qualify [for the Euros] and I think we can finish top of our group. We cannot underestimate our opponents, though, and we must work hard to win points every game and win the group."

Final Game of Preseason

Due to our preseason being so unceremoniously split by my first venture into international management, we had just one final preseason game to play before our first competitive match of the season against Chievo.

Anderlecht 0-4 Inter (Friendly)
Juan 24'
Ademilson 45+1'
Lazaro 77'
Muriel 85'

Player of the Preseason

Including the first part of preseason, our best player was young striker Ademilson. He managed to net 5 goals in 4 games, including a brace in the first game. His goals will be vital to any success we enjoy this season.
