The Royals enjoyed a fairly decent month, despite loses against Tottenham and their departure from the FA Cup, Reading gathered a vital 8-points in the league which have proved to be the points which get them two points away from the 40-mark which can almost guarantee Premier League survival. However, with the draws and losses, Reading have seen 7th placed United move 5-points clear in their bid for Europa League football. Improvement will be needed if they look to clinch a Europa League spot.
League Table
January Transfers
In:
Wilson Palacios has joined the Royals on a loan deal to the end of the season, With an injury to Akpan, and the sale of Mikele Leigertwood, Le Fondre has been left short of players to fill the central midfield void, Le Fondre clearly sees the out of favour Honduran as suitable cover to the end of the season.
Aron Gunnarsson has joined from promotion contenders Cardiff City, Reading had an initial bid of 5.75 million turned down, but with Gunnarsson expressing his wish to move away from the Championship side Reading were able to clinch Gunnarsson at a cut down fee of 4.5 million.
James Perch arrived in a deal, which involved a fee of 1.2 million in Readings direction and a part exchange for powerful midfielder Mikele Leigertwood, Despite not playing in Leigertwoods position Le Fondre clearly saw this as a good deal, and has looked to play Perch at Rb which has sounded exit alarms for aging full-back Stephen Kelly.
Reading were looking for potential signings in the Championship once more, and Seaside club Blackpool offered Reading want-away winger
Matt Phillips for 2.3 million, Phillips has expressed his delight at the Royals current league standing and has shown a determination to push them even higher.
Out:
Mikele Leigertwood left Reading to join struggling Newcastle United, Many fans have sounded their dissapointment at the sale of Leigertwood but trust the clubs decision and feel they got a decent deal for the central/defensive midfielder.
Pavel Pogrebnyak left Reading in favour of a move to Serie A team Napoli, Pogrebnyak had found a shortage of chances to present himself in the first team with Le Fondre appearing to prefer Ireland forward Noel Hunt.
Adam Federici was in a similar situation to Pogrebnyak, With the rapid progression of young shot stopper Alex McCarthy, Federici found his first 11 chances were few and far between and it was decided best by both him and the club that he was moved on which resulted in his 1.9 million switch to Lokomotiv Moscow
