FA Cup 3rd Round pre-match build up

Gary Neville
Martin Tyler

MT: Good afternoon and welcome to Sky Sports 2. We are at the National Hockey stadium in Milton Keynes for Cambridge United vs Liverpool in the 3rd round of the FA Cup and joining me is Gary Neville.
GN: Hi Martin good to be here and I'm looking forward to this match I think we could have a cupset on our hands.

MT: Well Gary, Cambridge are flying at the top of the Championship off the back of 3 back to back promotions. What do you make of manager Krupesh Shah after he took over the club back in 2012?
GN: Well he was well known for his time at England but nobody ever thought he would be able to hack it at the top as a manager and he's on the verge of taking this little team to the Premier League. It's absolutely incredible and I think he is destined for great things if he can keep this up.

MT: They face a Liverpool team that is breathing down Manchester City's neck at the top of the BPL. Does this make it too much for this inexperienced Cambridge team?
GN: I think Liverpool will be just a bit too strong. Let's have a look at the line-ups.

MT: Liverpool have a very attacking midfield and it could prove Sterling’s pace on the wing is unmatched. With improving strikers Sturridge and Volland, the Cambridge defenders are going to have their hands full.
GN: Cambridge are going pretty defensive with the line up and I expect them to play on the counter with the anchor man deployed. They’re missing their star man William Ekong after he failed a late fitness test and he will be a massive miss. Let’s see if Baudry can step up. Dummet and Smith will not be able to bomb forward so it will be interesting to see whether they can create any chances. A lot of that burden falls on Rainford Kalaba and his playmaking ability while Kakuta hasn’t had the best season so far and needs to put in a shift today.

MT: Right well we’ll take a quick break and be back soon for kick off. Join us in a few
Is that goalkeepers name ???????

Hahaha I messed it up on the editor when I put him in the game. The keeper's name is Krupesh Shah Jr. Its a father/son story lol

FA Cup 3rd Round match analysis

MT: Welcome back and we’re just about to get underway. What’s your prediction Gary?
GN: I think it will be a close one but Liverpool to take it 2-1.

26”
MT: Problem here for John Dunleavy he’s really struggling and as the anchor man Cambridge could be in trouble if he has to go off.

GN: Well looks like it is too much as Georg Margreitter comes on in his place, slotting in to CB and Mkandawire pushing into the anchor man role.

38”
MT: Yellow card for Dummett, he’s going to have to be careful, especially with Sterling operating on his side.

40”
MT: Georg Margreitter tried putting in a challenge on Sterling but just succeeded in poking it into his own net!
GN: Liverpool lead 1-0 and we’re almost at half time.

45+4”
MT: Oh my goodness Dummett clatters in to Sterling again and he has to be off. He is that’s his second yellow and he’s off before the first half is over.
GN: It was such a poorly timed tackle he could have got a straight red for that.

88”
MT: Andre Ayew seals it. 2 minutes before time he scores an excellent half volley from a tight angle and that’s sealed Cambridge United’s run in the FA Cup for another season.
GN: After the sending off, Cambridge went a lot more attacking and were unlucky to find Reina in such great form today. They could have scored 2 goals in the second half and snatched it if Ayew hadn’t scored but it wasn’t to be.

90” MT: And that’s the full time whistle, Liverpool in the end holding out 2-0. They dominated in possession and shots but Cambridge came out fighting in the 2nd half.
GN: If Krupesh can keep his team this passionate and dedicated along with his tactical prowess I can see them going far. They struggled to finish their chances and that maybe an area of improvement but that is something that we are likely to see addressed in the January transfer window. I look forward to seeing them in the Premier League next season and hopefully they recover from this to kick on and win the Championship.

Unlucky to get knocked out by such a poor team! haha
Unlucky to lose to Liverpool, but you're doing brilliantly otherwise! :)

Trouble in paradise

Having led the U's to the top of the Championship, it seems the club are suffering the effects of having so many players in the team as well as making monthly loan payments. The club is expected to have a negative balance by the end of the season and the board are mounting pressure on me to sell players.

I have no choice otherwise even with promotion we'll struggle with finances and I can't let this club get ruined because of money problems. Immediately I went through the team and picked out 7 players I can get rid of or let leave on free transfers at the end of the season. Gael Kakuta has had a poor season and I put him up for sale, with interest from Newcastle straight away. They bid £5 million and I negotiated this to a deal for £7 million. This was fantastic as we could also offload his astronomical wages of £35,000 a week!!! Two more players who had below average seasons were Larnell Cole and Davide Pettruci. I put them both up for same and managed deals £100,000 and £250,000, getting rid of combined wages of £11,000 in the process.

4 players will leave on free transfers at the end of the season which means I will also lose them from the wage bill but at the moment there is speculation about every player being under threat due to the current financial situation of the club. I am just hoping we can hang on to top spot and make use of the financial gains that will come from that.

Haha thanks mate!

It was tough to take that loss against Liverpool but I knew the boys weren’t too disheartened after a decent performance. We followed that up with an 11 game unbeaten streak in the Championship and with no other cup matches we could fully focus on the league. We won 8 and drew 3 games, but the chasing pack weren’t easing up and we were only 8 points clear at the top by the time we went to Charlton, despite such a strong run.

We lost 4-2 against Charlton and we were rubbish. There was nothing good about the performance. Defensively we were a mess. Our defensive player of the year William Ekong finished with a rating of 5.9 – something that has never happened in his time with me from League Two all the way to now.

We fought back superbly after that result and won 4 games on the trot. We secured an amazing promotion against Burnley, beating them away from home 1-0, with top scorer Mohamed Bangura scoring a 36th minute winner. Nothing can explain this feeling! FOUR back to back promotions with an amazing team, some of whom have stayed with me from day one. Especially my son and key player, key goalkeeper Krupesh Shah Jr. Every season he has made a request to go to a bigger team and I have had to reassure him that we are going to make it to the big league and 4 years later I have shown him we have the ability to do just that.

We won the title after the following game away to Bristol City and the celebrations carried on through the night. What could I say? The players were fantastic! They never gave up and fought all through the season but we were CHAMPIONS. We were in the Premier League and now had to set up to fight for survival in the BPL to make sure we weren’t going to get relegated in our first season.

There were going to have to be big changes within the squad and with 7 players having already left, there were going to be more transfers. We let striker Mark Cullen go to Ipswich for £250,000 and defender Ethan Ebanks-Landell leave on a free transfer. We needed to strengthen up all positions except maybe up front as I was confident we had the strike power ready to smash in the goals. I also set up loan deals for several of your youngsters at the club as our facilities just weren’t good enough to keep them here and develop well and this allows them to get the game time they need.

Finances were tight and we bad a negative balance of almost £10 million at the end of the season in the Championship. With promotion we needed a new stadium and the board had decided a loan was needed to build this. £28 million was the figure and that meant we had repayments due of £156,000 a month until 2031!!

The chairman saw a need to inject some funds into the club and pumped in a decent figure of £4 million. The great thing was the money that came in from winning the title pushed up our balance from negative to positive because of the TV rights, giving us a massive £58 million. With a new season in the BPL, we needed some transfer funds to be competitive and I was given a transfer budget of £34 million.

Having sold some players and asking for the percentage of transfer revenue to be increased, I was then allowed up to £40 million to operate in the market. This was fantastic news and I immediately sent my scouts out to Brazil. My scouting range had been upgraded and I knew there was a wealth of talent to exploit and automatically found 3 players to bring in.

Winger Gustavo Acosta, defensive midfielder Fernando Gomes
and right back Choco joined for a combined fee of £20 million. This provided us with some much-needed strength in positions that were very weak until now. Miguel Angel Sarabia was available on a free transfer from Real Madrid and we needed some stronger centre backs. I had to offer him some very high wages but he signed without hesitation, giving me confidence we would be able to have a strong and successful season in the BPL. We also splashed out on central midfielder Andrea Romano from Torino, signing him for £7 million. Most of these signings are youngsters that will hopefully improve with the game time they are pretty much guaranteed this season. Ryan McLaughlin joined for £625,000 from Liverpool and Kenny Tete on loan from Ajax. 3 more players joined us on loan – Fabian Delph, Daryl Cooper from Manchester United and Kenneth Lodovica from Ajax. The final signing to complete my preseason transfers was South African centre back Eric Mathoho. I felt ready with this team and only had to find a back up goalkeeper to provide cover for Krups Jr.
