Good September For Newcastle

Newcastle looked to build on last month's results as they played four league games. They also kicked off their Capital One Cup campaign. They also played their first Europa League group match again Dinamo Tbilisi.

League Results

: Alessandro Matri

Newcastle hosted Swansea on the first day of September. The hosts took the lead when Alessandro Matri intercepted Swansea keepers' short pass and passed the ball into the net. He got his second when Hatem Ben Arfa played a through ball into his path. He struck the ball first time into the bottom right. After half time, Davide Astori nodded fellow Italian Davide Santon's cross into the net, bouncing off the post and in. Matri earned his hat-trick when he played a one-two with Moussa Sissoko. He received the ball and fired it into the corner past Vorm. He got his fourth when he went on a fantastic run. He took the ball out to the byline before cutting inside and tucking the ball in at the near post. They went 6-0 up when Moussa Sissoko volleyed Demba Ba's cross into the top corner. Swansea pulled one goal back in injury time when Mathieu Debuchy tackled James Mcclean. The ball trickled through to Scotsman Charlie Adam who smashed the ball past Krul. Attendance: 51,372.

: Victor Wanyama

With a 13 day gap between their impressive win over Swansea, Newcastle traveled to Southampton. The hosts took the lead in the second half when Jack Cork back-heeled the ball to Gastón Ramírez who smashed the ball past Tim Krul. They doubled their lead when Victor Wanyama flicked the ball on with his head to Rickie Lambert who took the ball into the penalty area before firing the ball into the net. Newcastle pulled one back when Alessandro Matri picked up Hatem Ben Arfa's short pass. He ran past three defenders before hammering the ball into the net. Attendance: 30,510.

: Davide Astori

Last years' champions Manchester City hosted Newcastle at The Etihad Stadium as they hoped to win the league for the second year running. It was a goalless match with the best chance coming from Newcastle midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa, who received the ball in the box but only managed to hit the post. Davide Astori turned in an impressive defensive performance as Newcastle held Man City at bay. Attendance: 47,405.

: Rubén

Newcastle hosted London side Fulham at St James's Park as they looked for their second win of the month in the league. Newcastle dominated the first half but couldn't find a way past the goalkeeper. With the game nearing an end in the second half, manager Alan Shearer brought on 'super-sub' Gabby Agbonlahor and also gave a professional debut to new 16 year old signing Manuel José Costa. With two minutes left, Costa picked up the ball on the left flank. He hit a cross into Agbonlahor. Agbonlahor took a shot at goal from the six yard box but the the shot was saved. However, it went straight back to Agbonlahor who tapped it into the net. The substitutes proved to be the right decision as Newcastle improved on their league position, to the delight of their fans. Attendance: 50,995.

Europa League Group K Result: VS Dinamo Tbilisi

They also played two games in their Group K Europa League stage, against Sporting Lisbon and Racing Club Genk. The other competition they played in was the Capital One Cup 4th round where they hosted Wolves.

League Results

: Matt Lowton

Newcastle hosted bottom placed side Aston Villa as they looked to carry on their impressive start to the season. However the game was not as easy as Newcastle thought it would be. It was a quiet first half with few chances for either side, perhaps more for Newcastle. In the second half, Alessandro Matri gave Newcastle the lead when Vurnon Anita played a ball through to him. He looked up before sliding the ball under the charging goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Villa equalized when Robert Snodgrass's cross found powerful striker Christian Benteke who nodded the ball into the net. Attendance: 42,612.

: Davide Astori

Newcastle shocked Arsenal last season by beating them 2-0 at St James's Park. This year, they did it again. Newcastle took the lead when vice-captain Davide Astori headed in Nicolás Gaitán's corner. After half time, Arsenal equalized when Santi Cazorla had a shot saved by Tim Krul. Krul made a good save but the ball went straight out to Joel Campbell who poked the ball in past the floored Krul. However, two minutes later, Newcastle were back in the lead when Moussa Sissoko went on a magnificent run from inside his own half. He took the ball out wide before passing it to Vurnon Anita on the edge of the penalty area. Anita took a quick glance up before firing into the bottom right corner. From the resulting kick-off, Arsenal gave away possession cheaply and paid the price as Newcastle fired in another, just seconds after scoring. Moussa Sissoko won possession and instantly played a great through ball into in-form striker ALessandro Matri. Matri took it into the penalty area before sliding the ball under the oncoming keeper. Attendance: 44,649.

: Moussa Sissoko

Newcastle played in their only away game in the league for October when they traveled to London to play recently promoted QPR. Newcastle took the lead just before half time when Nicolás Gaitán whipped in a corner. Loïc Rémy attempted to head it clear but inly headed it into the path of Moussa Sissoko who volleyed it in. After half time, Newcastle doubled their lead when Sissoko laid the ball off to captain Fabricio Coloccini on the edge of the area, who smashed the ball low and hard into the bottom corner. They rounded off their victory when Sissoko picked up Alessandro Matri's ball and fired past the keeper for his second of the game.
Attendance: 18,439.

Europa League Group K Results: VS Sporting Lisbon & RC Genk

: Davide Astori

Newcastle hosted group leaders Sporting Lisbon, as they looked to use their win over Dinamo Tbilisi as a platform to build on. It was always expected to be a close game. Newcastle scored the only goal of the game when Nicolás Gaitán's corner found Vurnon Anita who managed to dribble the ball into the back of the net. The game ended 1-0 and put Newcastle top of Group K. Attendance: 43,784.

: Demba Ba

Newcastle visited Belgium where they played against Racing Club Genk. Newcastle took the lead when Davide Santon was tackled. The ball went through to Alessandro Matri on the byline. He took a step inside before firing in from a tight angle. Minutes later, Genk equalized when Khaleem Hyland reacted first to a loose ball in the penalty area and smashed the ball in. Newcastle went back into the lead when Nicolás Gaitán scored a wonderful 25 yard free-kick which flew straight into the top corner and gave the keeper no chance. Demba Ba came on at half time and scored his first goal since returning to The Magpies' on loan from Chelsea when Davide Santon cleared the ball forward. Ba picked up the clearance and went on a run from the halfway line before firing into the bottom corner from just inside the penalty area. Genk pulled a goal back late on when Tom De Sutter headed in a cross from Julien Gorius. However it was too late and the match ended 2-3. This left Newcastle at the top of Group K with three matches left to play. Attendance: 22,000.

Capital One Cup 4th Round Result: VS Wolverhampton Wanderers

: Mathieu Debuchy

Having beaten West Ham to reach the 4th round, Newcastle were faced with a home tie against struggling Npower Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers. Newcastle took the lead with not even 30 seconds on the clock when Alessandro Matri smashed in Mathieu Debuchy's cross. They went 2-0 up when Matri crossed the ball to Tom Cleverley who tapped the ball past the Wolves keeper. They got their third before half time when Davide Santon picked up Moussa Sissoko's ball and fired it in at the near post past the diving keeper. They went 4-0 up in the second half when Mathieu Debuchy scored his first ever goal for Newcastle as he picked up Vurnon Anita's pass before absolutely hammering the ball into the top right corner. All the keepr could do was stand still and watch. Wolves pulled one goal back late on as Anthony Forde was presented the ball after a ricochet and he volleyed it past substitute keeper and debutant Morgan De Sanctis. This has set up an away tie for Newcastle against Blackburn Rovers in the quarter final. Attendance: 28,475.

Newcastle hosted high-flying Hull City as they looked to improve on their draw against Everton in the previous game. It was a quiet first half with no goals being scored. The second half remained mostly the same, with Newcastle having dominated the possession in the game so far. However, with five minutes to go, Moussa Sissoko released a thunderous drive at goal from 25 yards, which gave the goalkeeper no chance. The ball went through to captain Coloccini who smashed the ball in from a tight angle.
