Newcastle hosted London side Fulham at St James's Park as they looked for their second win of the month in the league. Newcastle dominated the first half but couldn't find a way past the goalkeeper. With the game nearing an end in the second half, manager Alan Shearer brought on 'super-sub' Gabby Agbonlahor and also gave a professional debut to new 16 year old signing Manuel José Costa. With two minutes left, Costa picked up the ball on the left flank. He hit a cross into Agbonlahor. Agbonlahor took a shot at goal from the six yard box but the the shot was saved. However, it went straight back to Agbonlahor who tapped it into the net. The substitutes proved to be the right decision as Newcastle improved on their league position, to the delight of their fans. Newcastle hosted bottom placed side Aston Villa as they looked to carry on their impressive start to the season. However the game was not as easy as Newcastle thought it would be. It was a quiet first half with few chances for either side, perhaps more for Newcastle. In the second half, Alessandro Matri gave Newcastle the lead when Vurnon Anita played a ball through to him. He looked up before sliding the ball under the charging goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Villa equalized when Robert Snodgrass's cross found powerful striker Christian Benteke who nodded the ball into the net. Attendance: 42,612.
: Davide Astori
Newcastle shocked Arsenal last season by beating them 2-0 at St James's Park. This year, they did it again. Newcastle took the lead when vice-captain Davide Astori headed in Nicolás Gaitán's corner. After half time, Arsenal equalized when Santi Cazorla had a shot saved by Tim Krul. Krul made a good save but the ball went straight out to Joel Campbell who poked the ball in past the floored Krul. However, two minutes later, Newcastle were back in the lead when Moussa Sissoko went on a magnificent run from inside his own half. He took the ball out wide before passing it to Vurnon Anita on the edge of the penalty area. Anita took a quick glance up before firing into the bottom right corner. From the resulting kick-off, Arsenal gave away possession cheaply and paid the price as Newcastle fired in another, just seconds after scoring. Moussa Sissoko won possession and instantly played a great through ball into in-form striker ALessandro Matri. Matri took it into the penalty area before sliding the ball under the oncoming keeper. Attendance: 44,649.
