Dazzling December For Magpies'

It was a busy month for Newcastle as they played nine games in all competitions, They played six league games against Crystal Palace, Wigan, Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. They played their final two Europa League Group K games against Sporting Lisbon and Dinamo Tbilisi. The other competition they played in was the Capital One Cup quarter-final against Npower Championship leaders Blackburn Rovers.

League Results

: Tom Cleverley

High-flying Newcastle hosted bottom side Crystal Palace as they looked to continue their impressive run of results. The Magpies' took the lead when Tom Cleverley volleyed in Davide Santon's cross. They doubled their lead after half time when substitute Gabby Agbonlahor tapped in Santon's cross. They got their third when Alessandro Matri reacted first to a loose ball in the penalty area and smashed the ball into the net. The match finished 4-0 when Tom Cleverley picked up Agbonlahor's through ball and slotted the ball past the keeper to score his second. Attendance: 42,048.

: Iván Ramis

After their confident 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, Newcastle looked to use the result to build from as they visited Wigan. However, Wigan held them to a draw as neither side could create enough chances to score from, and in the end failed to get a single shot on goal. An impressive display from Wigan defender Iván Ramis helped Wigan to hold Newcastle to the draw. Attendance: 21,316.

: Alessandro Matri

Newcastle performed exceptionally well as they beat Diego Simeone's Manchester United 2-0 at St James's Park. In the first half, there were a host of chances for both sides. As the game neared the end, Alessandro Matri picked up substitute Gabby Agbonlahor's through ball and slotted the ball in at the near post with the keeper not reacting in time to get down to it. Matri doubled the lead when ex-Manchester United player Tom Cleverley tackled former teammate Nemanja Vidic on the halfway line. With Vidic left stunned on the halfway line, there was only one defender left. However, Alessandro Matri was there for support for Cleverley and Cleverley superbly squared the ball to Matri. Matri fired the ball past the oncoming David De Gea to round off an impressive victory. After the match, Diego Simeone was sacked by Manchester United, with Chelsea manager taking over at Old Trafford a few weeks later. Attendance: 52,405 (sellout)

: Moussa Sissoko

Looking to build on their 2-0 victory over Manchester United, Newcastle visited The Hawthorns where they came up against West Brom. West Brom took the lead when James Morrison tapped in Nicolas Anelka's cross. Newcastle equalized when Moussa Sissoko smashed in fellow Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa's low cross to make it 1-1. Newcastle took the lead when Ben Arfa whipped in a corner which found Dutchman Vurnon Anita, who passed the ball past the keeper. They rounded off their victory when Mathieu Debuchy's cross found Moussa Sissoko and took the ball round the goalkeeper before passing the ball into the net. Attendance: 25,097.

: John Terry

Newcastle, who had already had some magnificent results already this month hosted Chelsea, who at this point still had the services of José Mourinho, who has since left for Manchester United. Newcastle took the lead when Alessandro Matri who looked set to score, instead selflessly squared the ball to Tom Cleverley who passed the ball past Petr Čech. Chelsea equalized before half time when English legend Frank Lampard hammered Rafael's cross past Tim Krul. The match finished 1-1 but Newcastle will not be too disappointed by the scoreline having held a strong Chelsea side to a draw. Attendance: 51,741.

: Davide Astori

Newcastle visited London, where they played Tottenham at White Hart Lane. Newcastle got off to a great start when Tottenham defender Gary Medel attempted to head a dangerous ball back to keeper Hugo Lloris. However, he didn't get enough on the header and Newcastle striker Demba Ba intercepted the back-pass and smashed the ball into the net. The match stayed 1-0 for the entire match with the help of a Man Of The Match performance from towering center back Davide Astori. Attendance: 36,284.

Europa League Group K Results: VS Dinamo Tbilisi & Sporting Lisbon

: Tom Cleverley

Having already qualified for the next round, Newcastle turned their attentions to winning the group. They hosted Georgian side Dinamo Tbisili as they hoped to keep their 100% record in the group. Newcastle took the lead when Alessandro Matri passed the ball to Tom Cleverley. Cleverley took the ball inside the penalty area before firing across goal and into the net. Dinamo Tbilisi equalized when Tom Cleverley fouled Mikel Alvaro in the area. Bakur Kakabadze converted the resulting penalty. After half time, Cleverley scored his second when he picked up Gaël Bigirimana's short pass on the edge of the area before firing at the goalkeeper. However the shot was too powerful to keep out and all he could do was push the ball into the net. Late into the game, Demba Ba scored a fantastic goal to make it 2-1. He ran on to Bigirimana's lofted ball before curling the ball into the top corner from 25 yards out. With Sporting Lisbon losing in the other game to RC Genk, this meant that Newcastle had won the group with one game in hand. Attendance: 41,420.

: Alessandro Matri

In what was the last game in Group K, Newcastle traveled to Portugal where they hoped to maintain their 100% record in the group. The visitors took the lead when Alessandro Matri picked up Demba Ba's fabulous through ball before firing past the goalkeeper. Three minutes later, Sporting Lisbon equalized when Franco Jara crossed the ball to Diego Rubio who smashed the ball past Tim Krul. The game remained 1-1 until late in second half stoppage time when André Santos fouled Gabby Agbonlahor in the penalty area. Matri converted the penalty to score his second of the game and ensure that Newcastle rounded off their Group K stage with maximum points. Attendance: 39,342.

Capital One Cup Quarter Final Result: VS Blackburn Rovers

: Matthew Kilgallon

Newcastle, having already beaten West Ham and Wolverhampton, they made a trip to Ewood Park where they played Blackburn. Blackburn took the lead when Scotsman David Goodwillie scored before half time. Goodwillie tackled young defender Kevin Mbabu, who was covering for the injured Davide Astori. Goodwillie went clean through on goal and fired past goalkeepr Tim Krul. The score remained 1-0 and Blackburn won the tie, setting up a semi-final clash between them and fellow Npower Championship side Reading. Attendance: 15,863.

Monthly Awards

Demba Ba wins The Player Of The Month award after finally making the performances that were expected of him on his return to The Magpies'. He scored twice this month from the wingers' position and also put in some very consistent performances with an average rating of 7.04.

The award for The Young Player Of The Month goes to Davide Santon, who turned in some very impressive defensive performances but also joined the attack where possible, making some great runs from the left flank.

I guess that Santa delivers ;)
Unlucky draw with Wigan there
Yeah, good results in most of the other matches though :D
Dayuuuummmm!!!! That's one Merry Christmas for Geordies :D Fantastic month

Newcastle Face AS Monaco in Europa League

Having qualified from Group K with maximum points, Newcastle found out who they would be up against in the next round. They have been put up against French side AS Monaco - who Newcastle manager rejected a job offer from just months ago. Shearer rejwcted them saying that he intends to bring success to Newcastle instead. He has already done a good job in his first season as manager and continues to do a good job this season. Monaco, who were in the same group as Chelsea, qualified in second place from their group. The first leg will be held in France, with the return leg coming a week later. Newcastle will be looking to get a good result from the first tie so they can build on it when they host Monaco in front of their 'Toon Army'. They will have to defend well against former Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse if they are to get a result from the leg. The winner of the tie will face either Turkish giants Galatasary or Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.
Hmm, is that As Monaco with or without Falcao, as that could make a difference. Anyway, good luck with the clash.
No they have him -_-
Ooh tough tie against A$ Monaco, good luck!
Thanks :P

Happy New Year For Newcastle

After what was a busy but successful month in December for Newcastle, they continued into 2014 determined to continue that success. It wasn't such a busy month, with Newcastle only playing four league games, compared to last months' six. They also played in the FA Cup against local rivals Middlesborough and Rochdale.

League Results

: Andriy Yarmolenko

In-form Newcastle visited Anfield where they faced Liverpool. Newcastle took the lead when Hatem Ben Arfa crossed the ball to Liverpool's reported transfer target Nicolás Gaitán who volleyed the ball in. Andriy Yarmolenko equalized when he headed in Simone Pepe's cross. Newcastle will see this as a good result after playing in front of 'The Kop'.
Attendance: 41,907.

: Moussa Sissoko

Having earned an away draw with Liverpool, Newcastle traveled to The Liberty Stadium where they played Swansea City. It was a tight game with both sides having a number of chances to score. The only goal of the game came in the second half when Moussa Sissoko headed in fellow Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa's free-kick. It was a good away win for The Magpies' who carried on their unbeaten league record with their great form of late. Attendance: 20,334.

: Moussa Sissoko

Newcastle hosted last years' runners-up Stoke City as they hoped to continue their unbeaten record in the league. Stoke took the lead early on when center back Ryan Shawcross headed in winger Jermaine Pennant's cross. After this goal was conceded, Newcastle looked much better and went on to dominate the half. However they could not find the goal they needed to equalize and went into the changing rooms one goal down. But straight after the half time break, Nicolás Gaitán took a shot at goal. His shot was saved but pushed straight into the path of Davide Astori, who was chosen as one of the World Team Of The Year center backs, who volleyed it on. Newcastle had a number of chances in the second half but failed to take them, costing them the chance to win. Attendance: 50,949.

: Victor Wanyama

Newcastle played their last league game of January when they hosted Southampton at St James's Park. Newcastle once again failed to capitalize on their chances in the first half, with them dominating the possession. However, it was not the same story in the second half, as five goals were shared between the two sides. Substitute Alessandro Matri, converted a penalty when Dejan Lovren fouled him in the penalty area. They doubled their lead when Nicolás Gaitán whipped in a free-kick. Neil Taylor missed a crucial interception and the ball went through to captain Fabricio Coloccini who smashed the ball in. Southampton pulled one back when Cheick Tioté tackled midfielder Morgan Schniederlin. The ball ran through to Jay Rodriguez who fired past the oncoming goalkeeper. Southampton incredibly equalized, having been two goals down, when Gastón Ramírez crossed the ball in to Schniederlin, who headed home his second. Newcastle retook the lead and won the game late on when Nicolás Gaitán began a magnificent darting run from far out wide. He took the ball past four defenders before squeezing the ball past the keeper from a tight angle. Attendance: 50,966.

FA Cup Results: VS Middlesborough & Rochdale

: Alessandro Matri

Newcastle kicked off their FA Cup campaign with a local derby in the 3rd Round. Alan Shearer saw this game as an opportunity to hand some first team chances to some of his young players. However, this plan slightly backfired in the first half when Middlesborough player Lukas Jutkiewicz played a through ball to Marvin Emnes, who took the ball round 15 year old goalkeeper Marlon Malfleury before passing the ball into the empty net. At half time, Newcastle brought on some experience in the form of Tom Cleverley and Gabby Agbonlahor with a slightly more experienced goalkeeper in Jan Oblak. They equalized when Cleverley picked up Alessandro Matri's pass and fired across goal into the bottom corner. Matri ensured they achieved a turnaround when he finished Gabby Agbonlahor's cross to see them into the 4th Round against Rochdale. Attendance: 49,777.

: Tom Cleverley

Newcastle hosted Rochdale as they looked to continue to the next round of the FA Cup. They took the lead when English midfielder Tom Cleverley finished off Nicolás Gaitán's cross with a simple tap-in. New signing Lazar Markovic scored his first goal for the club when he superbly volleyed in a cross from Cleverley. After half time, Cleverley scored his second when he played a one-two with Alessandro Matri before getting the ball back and firing past the keeper. He finished off a great game when he scored again for his hat-trick. Mathieu Debuchy crossed the ball in to Matri but he was tackled. However the ball bounced out to Cleverley who smashed the ball into the net. This set up a 5th round tie away to Birmingham City.

Monthly Awards

Moussa Sissoko wins The Player Of The Month award after two Man Of The Match performances, scoring once for the side.

The Young Player Of The Month award goes to Italian left back Davide Santon, who put in some very good performances and joined the attack where he could.

A decent month there with some important wins! Champions League position is there for the taking
Thanks :) Lot of teams hot on my tail though

Viduka's View

As promised in the previous transfer window, I'm back with my opinions of the Newcastle signings for this month. See below.

Arrivals

The latest transfer window has seen a lot of young players agreeing to join Newcastle. I'll start with two players, both from Holland. Dario Tanda, 19, joined from FC Twente for £85k. The other Dutch youngster to join is Robert van Koesveld, also 19, comes in from Ajax for £55k.

Viduka: Two decent prospects for low fees. Not sure if they'll be used with the rest of the squad being strong but if not I'm sure they could be sold for a healthy profit.
Rating: 6/10.

Three Brazilian youngsters have also joined the club. Victor Andrade, 18, who has already been labelled the next Ronaldo, joins the club for £4.8 million from Brazilian side Santos. Jean, 16, joins from Brazilian team Corinthians for £875k. He has been dubbed as the next Djalminho. The final Brazilian to join is Ricardo, 15, who joins from Fluminese for £700k. Jean and Ricardo will complete their move in two years time however.

Viduka: Some fantastic prospects, with Jean and Ricardo spending another two years in their home country to develop. Andrade has gone out on loan to struggling Hamburg for the season to help him get some first team experience.
Rating: 9/10

The Rest Of The Youngsters

Two more youngsters joined in this window. Lazar Markovic, 19, from Serbia, joins from Benfica for £600k after the winger was placed on the transfer list. 17 year old winger Greek Tasos Donis joins from Italian giants Juventus for £750k.

Viduka: Again, two more good prospects who with the right training could develop extremely well. Cheap signings too.
Rating: 8/10

The More Experienced Players

Goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis, 36, joins on a free transfer. Newcastle were said to be interested in him when his Napoli contract was running out. Midfielder Steven Defour, 25, joins on loan from FC Porto for a total fee of £190k.

Viduka: Both signings are intended for backup to the first team should Tim Krul or Vurnon Anita get injured. However, both signings are reliable and could develop into first team players if they put in good performances.
Rating: 7/10
