Dennis Wise speaking to Keys and Gray on Talksport
Richard Keys: Thanks for coming on the show Dennis. Everything seems to be going very well for you and Chelsea right now; could you have predicted that you would have such a great start to the season?
Dennis Wise: Morning lads. If someone had said to me that after my first thirteen games as manager of Chelsea we would be at the top of the league, unbeaten, I would never have believed you. It has been a cracking start to the season in all competitions and our confidence is sky high.
Andy Gray: Everything appears to just work for you on the pitch. You are rarely conceding any goals and are scoring them at the opposite end. What do you think is the secret behind your success?
Dennis Wise: I don’t think there is a secret to be honest. I said right from the start that the most important thing for me was for us to remain responsible at the back and ensure we don’t concede goals. I explained to the team that if they managed this then the goals would naturally come which they have.
Andy Gray: Your team just don’t seem to give away the ball?
Dennis Wise: I would prefer us to have it than them. I think it is as simple as if we control the ball, play a simple passing game then the chances will be created and with the quality we will score the goals needed.
Richard Keys: Lewandowski has settled in alright hasn’t he?
Dennis Wise: I cannot praise Robert enough. It can be a difficult challenge for players when they move from one country to another. Not just in terms of settling into a new area but also adapting to a new style of football. He has shown in the goals he has scored that he hasn’t needed time to settle in but instead has carried on his great form that he had back in Germany.
Andy Gray: What do you think the team will have achieved by the end of the season?
Dennis Wise: I couldn’t predict that we would have such a good start so I cannot tell you where we will be in the league come May time. I do think we will be thereabouts but there is still a lot of games left to be played in not just the Premier League but there is still the Champions League and the upcoming FIFA Club Championship.
Richard Keys: Is it nice for you to get the recognition for your success by receiving the Premier League manager of the month award for the third month in a row?
Dennis Wise: My own personal success in terms of awards do not matter whatsoever. I appreciate that I have been chosen but it is down to the players. They are the ones on the pitch. They are winning the games.
Richard Keys: Well thank you for coming on Dennis and we both wish you all the best for the rest of the season.
Andy Gray: Good luck Dennis.
Dennis Wise:Cheers lads.
