The fourth round of the Capital One Cup pitted Dougie Freedman’s Bolton Wanderers against the recently appointed manager of Chelsea, Dennis Wise. Dennis Wise had made it clear recently in the press that the club were struggling to find players who were match fit and that discussions were taking place behind the scenes in order to make improvements to the training regimes.
As a result of his concerns we saw Chelsea start with a starting 11 that included five players from the club’s under 18 team. Mitchell Beeney, Fankaty Dabo, Jesse Starkey, Ismail Seremba and Lamisha Musonda were all given their first start for Chelsea and given the opportunity to experience playing with some of the first team players. Wise has praised each of the youngsters on how dedicated they were to the team and that they appeared to want to stake a claim to a regular place. He went on to suggest this may not happen but he was pleased to know he could rely on youth players to step up when needed.
Chelsea have had their name entered into the draw for the quarter final stage of the competition and been put up against North London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur. This will be seen as a bigger challenge than against Bolton Wanderers but it will be interesting to see if Wise sticks with youth or brings back the more experienced players.
