Why Stoke?

In the last couple of years, there has been a lot of unfair stigma attached to Stoke about them being a "rugby team", and not playing good football on most occasions. I'm one of not many to not join in this criticism, and this story is one of my ways to protest Stoke's innocence.

I also feel that Stoke is traditionally quite an unfashionable club, which I am aiming to change (in my save, at the very least). I want to turn them from a mid-table side with not much history, into a side challenging for the Premier League title, and maybe even the Champions League by the time FM14 comes out in about three months.

Who Am I?

I have chosen to go for someone you may not have heard of - Mike Bassett. This is because he is fictional. He was created as the star of a film a few years ago, in which Bassett was England manager, and took England to the semi-finals of the World Cup (God knows how). Anyway, I've decided to use him as the manager, as some others have chosen to do in the past as well. I also recommend you look up the film and watch it, as it's funny and also has drama.

Mark Hughes Leaves Stoke

Former Manchester City boss Mark Hughes has resigned from his latest position at Stoke City due to a reported dispute with chairman Peter Coates, over budget restrictions. The Welshman had only been in the job for a few weeks, but now the Potters will be looking for a new manager to take over at the Britannia. Stoke narrowly survived the threat of relegation last season, before Tony Pulis, who had been the manager at Stoke since 2006, resigned, leaving Coates to appoint Hughes, a man who played for Manchester United, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.

In order to prevent the threat of relegation during the coming season under the new manager, the chairman Peter Coates made a large sum of money available to bring in new players with. The new manager duly brought in Erik Pieters from PSV Eindhoven for £3 million, before signing another defender, Marc Muniesa, from his former club Barcelona, on a free. Stoke also agreed a deal with New England Revolution striker Juan Agudelo, who will sign on a free in January.

However, after this latest round of spending, Peter Coates chose to readjust the budgets available to the manager, in order to comply with UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations. Whilst this seems like a good idea, it certainly didn't please Hughes, who claimed he would no longer be able to strengthen his team in the areas that he needed to. He also said he resigned because he felt he was treated unfairly by his new chairman, and that he should have been consulted over the proposed changes.

Just weeks after appointing a new manager, Stoke City are now back on the market, looking to place a new man at the helm. It is believed that the new manager must be able to relieve all the stigma attached to Stoke City, and also play a better brand of football than that was played under Pulis and Hughes. So far, the bookies' favourite is former Norwich and England manager Mike Bassett, but Roberto Di Matteo and former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen have also been mooted as possible contenders for the job.
Dat title :P
