EMIRATES CHEERS GUNNERS ON TO QUARTER FINALS
ARSENAL 4-0 (6-2 AGG.) HAJDUK - H. KALDRIM, A. YARMOLENKO, J. WILSHERE, A. SCHÜRLLE
"Congratulations to Arsenal, it was a well deserved win, and they played remarkably to go through to the next round"
For a few minutes though... it looked like Wenger would be saying nearly those exact words. See, Bendiš had thrown a little surprise to try to mix Arsenal up. Fielding 16 year old Andrija Fiorentini in the back, Bendiš threw Antonio Mili?, a defensive midfielder, in between Mario Ljubi?i? and Tomi Kiš. Why? Well... he had nothing to lose.
And it nearly worked. A great tackle by Mili? early in the 1st half (which was, frankly, all Bendiš wanted) the defender made a quick pass to Tomi Kiš, who shot just over the bar, before, not 10 minutes later, Mirko Oremuš got an excellent shot saved by Fabianski. It could have been 1-0, 2-0 maybe for Hajduk. Even a goal would have been enough. See, Mili? wasn't there just to play defensive forward. Mili? will be the first of several switches if Hajduk scored to try to shut up shop
Alas, it didn't work.
Kaldrim scored just after Hajduk's second shot, with a magnificent run from the left side, to open the scoring, much to Bendiš's dismay, in the 12th minute. After that, it was all Arsenal, as the Gunners scored in the 15th (Schürrle), waited for the half, and then scored twice more in the second half (Wilshere, Yarmolenko).
And, with that, Bendiš bowed out of the Champions League, and, while the stadium filed out, the Hajduk fans... the few that came to London... sang songs of their heroes from the upper reaches of the stadium. Some of the Arsenal players stayed on the pitch and watched in awe, while the entire Hajduk team thanked the fans for everything.
Because, while for Arsenal, it will likely be another failed trophy attempt... for Hajduk, it was the greatest achievement in years. Sure, the 2nd round would have been nice. But for Hajduk... this was the most they had ever had. They had played at Bernabeau. They showed nothing but glory in Madrid. Amsterdam felt their wrath, and Basel fell.
But in Split? Hajduk showed nothing but love. Love to their team, love to their shirt, and love to their fans. And that's why, while Emirates, Bernabeau, San Siro, etc... are all so much larger, the tiny beauty of the Adriatic is one of the most revered venues in Europe... if not the world.
Welcome to Split, ladies and gentlemen... we'll see you next time
