Matthaus’ First Press Conference

J – Journalist

LM – Lothar Matthaus

J- Firstly, welcome to Portugal Lothar.

LM- Thank you, I hope to have a long and successful career here at Lisbon.

J- Firstly, what are you going to be doing about the transfers Frank Vercauteren made in his short time here?

LM- Frank is a great manager. Just because certain “affairs” happened doesn’t take that away from him, and I have full trust in his signings.

J- What do you think are your targets for this season?

LM- I think this season we have to challenge for the league title, and definitely challenge for the Europa League. A cup would also be nice.

J- What do you think of the staff setup here?

LM- I’m going to be frank with you here. It’s not great, and I will be making big changes. I want to make the staff more foreign, with staff worldwide. It helps with any new signings, and doesn’t just limit us to Portuguese staff. As it stands, me and the chairman are the only foreign staff members.

J- Do you think the squad needs much improvement?

LM- Not this season, but if we want to become European Champions, then yes, definitely.

J- What kind of tactics will you be aiming for?

LM- I have three in mind, but I’m not telling you what they are, for obvious reasons.

J- Ok, thank you for your time. Good luck in your career here at Lisbon.
Certain affairs aye ;)
PORTO ,PORTO ,PORTO!!Good luck xD
"I’m not telling you what they are, for obvious reasons." lol

Very nice press conference!

Squad

Matthaus walked into his office and sat down at his computer. He checked his emails, and found one from his assistant manager Oceano Cruz. He checked it, and found a very useful squad list. Such a pity he was being sacked.

He was pretty impressed with the squad, although spotted one or two weaknesses.
looks like the worst part of the team is attack !
Just replace chetri with a striker with quality like dani Pacheco or sturridge

Viola and Rubio definitely have good enough attributes to play upfront, I'm not worried. Might try and get someone though, although no rush.

Sammmm:

There's nothing I can do about him, he only signed this summer, and won't leave now.
The chairman's wife must be hot..

Sporting Lisbon - Club Overview

Sporting Clube de Portugal, commonly referred to as Sporting CP or Sporting and colloquially known as Sporting Lisbon outside of Portugal, is a Portuguese multi-sports club based in Portugal's capital city of Lisbon. Although they successfully compete in a number of different sports, Sporting is mostly known for its association football team. Founded in Lisbon in July 1, 1906, it is one of the "Três Grandes" (The Big Three in English) football clubs in Portugal, with Benfica and Porto being the other two clubs, Sporting's two biggest rivals. With more than 100,000 registered club members, its teams, athletes and supporters are often nicknamed Leões (English: The Lions) by its fans.

During the first century of the club's existence, the teams and the athletes of Sporting won 3 Olympic gold medal, as well as many silver and bronze medals and thousands of national and district titles.

Sporting was one of the founding members of the Primeira Liga in 1933 and it has never been relegated from the Primeira Divisão (First Division) of Portuguese football, along with FC Porto and Benfica.

Sporting is the third most successful Portuguese football club in Portuguese competitions, with 44 titles, behind Benfica, which has 67 titles, and FC Porto, which has 64 titles, and the third most successful Portuguese football club in international competitions, with 1 title, behind FC Porto, which has 7 titles, and behind Benfica, which has 3 titles. It is the third most successful Portuguese football club in terms of total titles, with 45 titles, behind FC Porto, which has 71 titles, and Benfica which has 70 titles.

Domestically, Sporting won a total of 18 Portuguese Liga titles, 19 Championship of Portugal/Portuguese Cup titles and 7 Portuguese SuperCup titles.

Internationally, Sporting won the 1963–64 European Cup Winners' Cup and were runners-up in the 2004-05 UEFA Cup.

2012-13 Season Expectations

This season the Sporting board expect the club to challenge for the Liga ZON Sagres title.

Budgets

£3.5m transfer budget
£336k p/w wage budget

She is, and I should know ;)

Tactics

4-2-3-1

This is our first choice tactic, and our first-choice lineup for this tactic. It works well, and is very attacking, which makes the board happy.

4-2-2-2

This is also very attacking, and works well. It will also help Viola and Rubio gametime, which they'll need to reach their awesome potential.

4-3-1-2

A third attacking tactic, which helps players get gametime. We shouldn't rely on it, as it can be unreliable, but it'll get the job done if needed.

Sporting Seal Bakkali Deal

Sporting Clube de Portugal have completed the signing of PSV's young striker Zakaria Bakkali for £575k.

The 16-year-old has signed his first professional contract, although will only become a pro on his 17th birthday in 6 months time.

Lisbon manager Lothar Matthaus has said he is "delighted" with the signing, and firmly believes Bakkali will become a key player for Sporting and the Belgian national team in the future.

Bakkali is on £45 p/w, but his pro contract is £1.6k p/w.
