OP Attacking Gasperini 3-4-3 / Goals Galore in Serie A

I created Gasperini's first 3-4-3 he used at Genoa between 2013 and 2016, I tested it with Genoa and finished 5th in Serie A and won the Italian Cup.

Football Manager 2023 Tactics - OP Attacking Gasperini 3-4-3 / Goals Galore in Serie A
Hello guys, welcome to my new tactic emulation.

This time I try to emulate Giampiero Gasperini's 3-4-3 at Genoa from 2013 to 2016, before taking over as the manager of Atalanta.

In the three years from 2013 to 2016, Gasperini achieved a 13th place, a 6th place, and an 11th place. In the 2014-15 season, even though he finished sixth, he couldn't participate in the Europa League of the following season because Genoa was not granted the license.

Gasperini used a 3-4-3 formation with a trio of forwards which in Football Manager 2023 can be replicated in this way.

First of all, we have a sweeper-keeper on defend with the instruction to take fewer risks.

In the defensive trio: we have 2 ball playing-defenders with defensive task and with the same instruction to dribble more and a libero on support with the instructions to dribble less, hold position and tackle harder.

On the two sides we have two wing-backs on support, both with the instruction to stay wider.

Then, as central midfielders, we have 2 segundo volantes, this is how I tried to replicate Gasperini's two CM. Both of them are set on support and have same instructions: pass it shorter, take more risks, get further forward, mark tighter, shoot less often.

Finally, the forward trio, we have 2 advanced forwards set on attack with the instructions to shoot less often and take more risks, and a poacher on the centre with the only instruction to shoot more often.

The mentality is positive with a fairly wide attacking width.

The instructions in possession are the following: much shorter passing, higher tempo, focus play down left and right and overlap left and right, pass into space, low crosses and run at defence.

In transition: counter-press, counter, distribute to center backs and take short kicks.

Out of possession: high pressing, standard defensive line, trigger press much more often, prevent short gk distribution.

I tested this tactic the first season with Genoa, in the database Retegui is already at Genoa, and he scored 22 goals in Serie A, with also 14 assists, while the poacher, Flavio Junior Bianchi, a Genoa wonderkid, scored 20 goals even if he did not play a lot of games in the first part of the season. The third forward on the left, Mattia Aramu scored 9 goals with 6 assists.

Another player who really played well in this season is Aaron, the left wing-back, he did 21 assists in 37 apps and was the top assistman in Serie A. On the right side, Sabelli (24 apps, 7 assists) and Hefti (23-2) alternated as wing-back.

With this tactic Genoa won the Italian Cup and in Serie A finished 5th, only 1 point behind AC Milan. It was a great season, and this tactic works very well and allows me to score a lot of goals but is a bit weak in defense (it could be also because I tested it with Genoa, a team which according to the season preview predictions, was expected to finish 13th).

In fact, I sent you the transfermarkt link just as reference for the squad list of that season. Yes, when defending in that season they used a 5-4-1 you are right, but when attacking it was a 3-4-3 and next to Gilardino there were Fetfazidis and Antonelli (two wingers) OR Sculli and Floro Flores or Calaiò. We can say Sculli was something between a left winger and a forward, but Floro and Calaiò were two centre forward. When Gasperini wanted to use a more attacking formation, Gilardino and Floro were a perfect option, that's one reason why I tried this risky option, the other reason is that in FM 23 default database , Mattia Aramu even if he cannot be considered a centre forward but more a trequartista can play very well as CA as you can see from my results.

Transfertmarkt isn't a tactical or statistical source, only a player's list. These days I've seen several highlights of the 13/14 season and I've noticed that Genoa uses the 541 when defending and attacks with wide wings. If we then think of FM, the 3 strikers should be the least effective choice compared to the wingers and attacking midfielders: Why this risky choice given that, next to Gilardino, they played 2 wingers and not 2 strikers?

This was Genoa squad in 2013 at the beginning (when Liverani was sacked by Preziosi and Gasperini replaced him). Perotti came to Genoa in 2014 and Suso in 2016 from AC Milan on loan.
About the libero, Gasperini wants his 3 central defenders to move forward and also he said: I haven't ever played with 3 pure central defenders, at least one of the 3 was once a full back (Antonini or Marchese) that I put in the centre, the full backs are much better in building the play from the defense. You could say : why did you not choose to add another Ball playing defender instead of a libero? well, because on the game match engine it does not work with 3 bpd, I tried it but I did not see the moves I wanted to see. so I tried with a libero and in my season with this Genoa 2022-23, Vazquez did well as libero and so did Matturro.

Could you tell me which starter 11 inspired you? I'm curious to know who played the Libero in Genoa 2013/16 (Burdisso? De Maio? Izzo? They're three Central Defender or No-nonsense CB) and why you put Suso and Perotti on the forward line and not on the wings (They played very wide and you don't use the Stay Wider). 2 big mistakes if you studied the team. Can you link your sources?

I don't follow Lucullus neither any other youtuber because I prefer to learn myself from my experience and by reading tactical analysis as I did for this Genoa (2013-16). Having that said, I know who Lucullus is, he is very famous, and I am happy if he created a tactic that is similar to mine. But I watched the video you shared, he did Genoa 2006-2010 not 2013-2016 that I did. Gasperini played in a different way because obviously he had different players.

Excellent tactic, too bad it's a revisited copy of LucullusGames' Gasperini. Here is the original link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQhRzgrcXoo&t=1s
