Vitória Guimarães Count The Money
Portuguese football may never be the same again, as English tycoon Martyn Godfrey has successfully completed his takeover of Portuguese club Vitória Guimarães. Godfrey arrives at the club with lofty ambitions, stating to the press he will go all out in order to make the club a force to be reckoned with.
Questions must now be asked as to who takes the title of richest club in Portugal, as Godfrey reportedly plans to invest millions of pounds into the club to transform them into a superpower in European football.
Godfrey, 61, is known mainly throughout his homeland of England. It was there where he began his successful supermarket chain, the main source of his fortune. After investing in several other profitable businesses, football has become the next on the London-born tycoon's list as he plans to create a super team.
The new owner was presented outside the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques proudly displaying the club's shirt, and told the Portuguese media that he had big ambitions for the northern Portuguese club.
The Englishman, based in London, is a small time Chelsea supporter and this is where his interest in Vitória Guimarães first began. Due to Chelsea's affiliation with the Portuguese team, Godfrey began to learn more and more about the landscape of Portuguese football.
After learning that the domestic titles were practically always contested by two teams, FC Porto and SL Benfica, Godfrey decided he wanted to take on the challenge of building a new powerhouse in Portugal - and his decision was made much easier due to the fact that Vitória Guimarães has a connection close to him.
Godfrey promised big things for the club, promising a new era of dominance for the team firstly on the domestic stage before taking that on to the next level - European football.
It remains to be seen whether manager Rui Vitoria will retain his job, with Godfrey most likely pursuing a completely fresh start after Vitoria's side failed to qualify for continental qualification.
