Youth Intake Day
The youth trialists were eager to show what they had in store
It's that day of the year. Youth intake day. The day where every club in the country prays for a wonderkid to emerge at the footsteps of the club's door. For some clubs, that would become a reality, for some.. it was completely out of the question.
We'd be praying for the next big thing, but in all honesty we knew that would probably be unlikely. The best we could hope for was someone who could do a job for years to come. In an ideal world, I want a side fully home grown. But we know that is not be possible just yet.
So, who was the pick of the lot? The answer to that was Nuno Fontes, a sweeper from the east Lisbon area.
Nuno Fontes
Nuno is a determined character who possesses great work rate and defending attributes. After analysing the game I could tell his tackling and heading were his main strengths, whilst he looked quite fit for a 15-year old.
As the equal best thing to come out of this academy, I felt the need to sign him up and get him training as soon as possible. As we saw with Pedro Monteiro, game time is the key to unlocking a player's true potential.
So, a successful intake in conclusion. We have a very capable player on our hands but I do feel he is too short to play in central defence, and I'm not going to be employing a sweeper. Therefore, I will attempt to re-model him as a defensive midfielder.
