October- Starting Positively

http://s40.photobucket.com/user/fzemdegs/media/Untitled_zps05912b7d.png.html

Despite a speight of injuries we held our own in the opening month

The season has kicked off at last, and it promised to be a very positive one after last year's disappointment. Could I start the season well and set up some good form? Let's see.

Results

Our first test was a real hard one, against the menacing Newcastle Jets, my old side. Joel Chianese, filling in for the injured Bergara, got us off to an excellent start just 7 minutes in. However a goal from a corner by Connor Chapman equalised, and then in the second half Adam Taggart and Joey Gibbs gave them an unassailable 3-1 lead. Jack Batten scored on his debut to bring it back one but then the Jets had the last laugh with Andrew Hoole. Final score 2-4.

Next up was a somewhat easier task in Brisbane Roar, and the in-form Chianese gave us the lead after half an hour. We dominated proceedings for the rest of the game and then Chianese snagged a late goal to secure his brace and a 2-0 win.

The match against Central Coast is always a heated affair, but we were too aggressive and conceded a penalty just 13 minutes in. Adam Kwasnik converted the opportunity but it took just 11 minutes for Rhyan Grant to peg it back. Just before half time, Hagi Gligor goalled to put us in front and we defended the lead for the rest of the game, giving us a 2-1 win.

The all important Sydney Derby was next, and the Western Sydney Wanderers wanted the win at our ground almost as much as I wanted to actually win something in my career. We got off to a dream start when Corey Gameiro scored in the 12th second (you read that right) and for the most part of the match we were in control. But 1 lapse in concentration saw Wanderers left back Antony Golec equalise, and the advantage was gone. The first of 3 Sydney Derbies ended in a 1-1 draw.

The final game of a busy month was against Melbourne Heart, but it was a boring game. We were forced to defend in the last half hour after a Nikola Petkovic red card and the match finished 0-0 as a result.

League Table

It is a bit too early to comment on the league table, but the competition looks to be pretty competitive after our positive start sees us in lowly 6th. The next few months should be a better gauge of how I'm doing.

Player Of The Month

Joel Chianese had a stellar month, filling in for the injured Ander Bergara. Playing in the slightly unfamiliar trequartista role, he managed to kick 3 goals and is currently leading the A-League goalscoring charts.
The big 1k! Positive start, too, I'm sure you can win the league this season ;)
A pretty decent start, but you'll have to start turning those draws into wins next month, good luck!
Walter Pretty big call :P

Zed Yeah I do, hopefully I can!

November- Soaring

An undefeated month saw us jump to the top of the table

If November was a gauge on how we would do over the course of the season, it's looking pretty good as we were undefeated in our first month. Let's have a look at the results.

Our first game saw us take the excruciatingly long trip across Australia to Perth, to play Perth Glory. Corey Gameiro got us off to a fine start as the speedy youngster scored after 18 minutes, but it was another case of a late equaliser when Nebojsa Marinkovic equalised for the Glory. A 1-1 draw.

Adelaide United was our next task, and for the second time this season we scored in the first minute, this time by Dimitrijevic. Joel Chianese doubled the lead on 42 minutes and we led the rest of the night, winning 2-0.

We had another long trip, this time over the ditch to play Wellington Phoenix. It was also the return of Ander Bergara, and although he took a while to get firing he did so in style with a 59th minute stunner to score on debut. Pedj Bojic scored from left wing back just 13 minutes later to seal yet another 2-0 win.

We played the Jets once more, this time at their home ground. It eneded up a bore draw, with just 3 shots on target. However, this match also meant we climbed to the top of the table!

So after this great month we sit on top! Goal difference separates us and the Jets and Phoenix and it appears to be a 3 horse race this season. Perhaps too many draws but can't complain with first!

Player Of The Month

Sebastian Usai had a terrific month in goals, conceding just 1 in 4 games and posting 3 games with over 7 in ratings- no mean feat for a goalie. Really cemented himself as No.1 keeper.
Well a good month I guess as you were undefeated! And you're riding high in the league!
Josh We are indeed! Onwards and upwards!

Ryall Breaks Games Record

http://s40.photobucket.com/user/fzemdegs/media/Untitled_zps2933085c.png.html

After today's match between Sydney FC and Adelaide United, central defender Sebastian Ryall played his 170th game for the Sky Blues and in the process broke the record for games played at Sydney FC. The previous holder Terry McFlynn had held the record for over 4 years but his mark of 169 was beaten today.

Sebastian Ryall started his career in the Australian Institute of Sport, before making his A-League debut with Melbourne Victory in 2007/08. He made 30 appearances for the club over 2 seasons before moving to Sydney FC, and has been a first team regular ever since. The centre back has missed only 4 games over the past 3 seasons, and has made a positive start to the new season.

At 27, Ryall still has plenty of his career left and Sean-Paul Lodovico will hope the defender can continue to break records under his regime.

Sky Blues Sky High

http://s40.photobucket.com/user/fzemdegs/media/Untitled_zps5f5db7a7.png.html

The first third of the season is over, and sitting on top at this stage is Sydney FC. The Sky Blues have rebounded from a disappointing campaign last time around and lead the league by goal difference over Newcastle and Wellington. Let's have a look what has made Sydney rise so spectactularly.

The Tactic

The unfamiliar 3-5-2, rarely used in the A-League, has been the tactic week in, week out for Sydney and this season the team has perfected it. The real key are the wing backs, and with a combination of Rhyan Grant and Nikola Petkovic the Sky Blues have a pair of harding working individuals which really run the side. The 3 centre backs and centre mids have moulded well and everyone knows their role.

The Defence

After a shocking defensive display last season, Lodovico has made some major tweaks which have fixed the problem completely. Rhyan Grant at right wing back, replacing Pedj Bojic, was a major move whilst Sasa Ognenovski now must compete with new signings Brendan Dragas and Jack Batten for his position. These 2 will also replace him next season, and Lodovico now has a defence he can rely on for the next 5 years.

The Work Rate

Sydney FC have made a name for themselves as a ruthless, hard working outfit with an amazing workrate. From the backline through to the strikers, everyone works hard for their team mate, no less than Milos Dimitijevic. The Serbian is an incredible runner, popping up everywhere and ruling the corridor, whilst Rhyan Grant is also a phenomenal athlete on his right wing. These 2 have combined for 9 assists so far, and if the Sky Blues can continue this incredible workrate all season the title is all but theirs.

The Signings

Sydney FC underwent a major revamp over the offseason, with 7 players leaving and 6 coming in. This overhaul has made a huge impact on the squad, providing the depth which has kept the Sky Blues near the top of the table despite international call ups and injuries. Ander Bergara has been impressive since returning from injury, whilst Dani De Silva and Sebastian Usai have slotted into the first team seamlessly. Jack Batten and Julius Davies are valuable back ups, and the signing of Brendan Dragas may prove to be legendary as he is already showing signs of greatness. Lodovico's transfer business was incredible over pre-season and is definitely a major factor.

With a positive start under their belt, Sydney FC must now push on and get some distance between themselves and their rivals. Lodovico is finally secure in his position, and the players are confident, so he will hope his team can march on into the finals.

December- Heating Up

http://s40.photobucket.com/user/fzemdegs/media/Untitled_zpsb1df9e3d.png.html

A slip-up against the Victory was costly and meant we dropped to second

The final month of 2017 saw some mixed results, and although we managed to win 2 and draw 1 out of 4, the Jets were better and we dropped to second. Let's explore the month in detail.

Results

http://s40.photobucket.com/user/fzemdegs/media/Untitled_zps0a915927.png.html

Our first game was the infamous Big Blue against the Melbourne Victory, and it saw one of it's greatest moments when Josh MacDonald pulled off a wonderous long shot on 20 minutes. We had control of the match for the most part, but Rob Sarris of the Victory managed an unlikely equaliser and John Buceto got them in front with 8 minutes to go. They hold on to record a 2-1 victory.

We hosted Brisbane Roar in our first game, and they got off to a great start with Italian striker Antonio Rozzi scoring just after the half hour mark. Luckily Ander Bergara pulled it level before half time, and a late goal by Rhyan Grant saved the day. This time we won 2-1.

Rhyan Grant continued his stellar form with a very early goal in the second minute against Melbourne Heart, cutting in nicely. However Mate Dugandzic was taking notes and scored an almost identical goal 53 minutes later to tie the game 1-1.

Our New Year's Eve game would be against the Central Coast Mariners, and Kim Seung-Yong got their fans celebrating with an early stunner. We grinded out the first half before Nikola Petkovic drifted in to score from the half time kick off. With time ticking away, it looked to be a draw until Ander Bergara stepped up to the plate, delivering a beautiful corner that was easily converted by Matthew Jurman. A 2-1 win to end the year.

Apologies, I screenshotted the wrong screen.

So after the loss in the Big Blue, the Jets have edged ahead and lead by 2 points. The title race is well and truly on now with half of the season gone, and it's vital not to drop points.

Player Of The Month

Rhyan Grant was in incredible form over December, epitomising the team effort and showing great skill from right wing back. Kicked 2 goals and assisted one over the month.
Interesting to see Newcastle still going strong in your absence. I think you can still win the title, though, keep going! :D
Walter Thanks for the support!

Del Piero Sings Grant's Praises

http://s40.photobucket.com/user/fzemdegs/media/Untitled_zpseb621abd.png.html

Sydney FC favourite Alessandro Del Piero today talked to the Sydney Morning Herald, endorsing the stellar form of Sydney wing back Rhyan Grant. The 25 year old has been a major factor in Sydney FC's rise, and Del Piero hasn't missed his efforts.

Alessandro Del Piero:
Run out of words for this lad, Grant is pure class at the moment. Last season I think he struggled a bit in the midfield, but ever since he moved out to right wing back he has been magnificent. His workrate is a huge positive, he runs all day and as a result he is everywhere! 3 goals and 5 assists so far, a tremendous effort, and I think he could go onto to be a front runner for Player Of The Year.

Grant has made the transition from central midfield to right wing back remarkably easily, and after a promising pre-season preparing for his role the 25 year old has become a revelation. 1 of the in-form players of the competition, Rhyan Grant will hope to continue his fine form in the coming weeks and helped mount a title challenge for his club.
That headline.. straight out of FM me thinks ;)
