The return to 'normality'

After 16 days away and memories of their first holiday together, they return to Salzburg. Preseason starts in 2 weeks, so they will spend as much time now with family and friends as they can before another long season.

It is a privileged life being a professional footballer or manager with the money involved and being told what your tasks and objectives are, but the summer break is short, and they don’t get a lot of time with their extended family. Marcel is only 32. This is when players consider retiring to be with their family more and try other things.

He has just started his journey.

It has been a week since the Schmid’s returned from their magical holiday and Marcel is looking forward to the new season.

Everyone is required back on Sunday to prepare for the new campaign, but the staff are in early to get things ready.

Rene Holzinger (General Manager) – Good morning Marcel! We would like to offer you an extension to your contract due to last seasons achievements. Of course you have a year left on your current deal and you can take time to decide, but we would like to offer you reassurances that you are the man we want leading the team!

Marcel Schmid – I would be delighted to extend my stay here. Last season was such an experience for me that i'll never forget. My first in management and I just feel like I had the boards support throughout, so it would be my pleasure to commit to this club.

Rene Holzinger – Well that was easily done The new contract will start from today 22/6/2020 until 30/6/2022. This will include a weekly salary of €39,000 a week. (That is a €10,000 increase! Wouldn’t it be nice if every job included such a bonus!)

Marcel puts pen to paper on his second managerial contract!

Now he has been tied down to a further two-year-deal, it may detract some of the interest he will receive from some of Europe's top clubs. However, I suspect he will still be linked with some vacant jobs that may crop up throughout the season.

This protects Salzburg for at least another season. They can't lose him for free!

Can the CL run be replicated?

Pre-Season

The first pre-season game for the new season vs Bohemians 1905. This is one of two friendlies in the Czech Republic, and then the team heads for a German tour consisting of 3 games.

18/7 The season starts properly with the first round of the ÖFB Cup.

European Championship 2020

The holders Portugal are out in the group stage. They where put in the group of death containing France, England and Scotland! It was actually a shock loss to Scotland that sent them packing and finish bottom.

4/7 England are knocked out of the tournament that ends with the Semi and Final being played at Wembley!
Spain 2-0 England.

7/7 Spain 0-0 France (Spain win on penalties against the World Champions)

8/7 Croatia 1-0 Belgium (Croatia through tho their first Euros Final

Final in Wembley Stadium sees Spain beat Croatia 2-1!

Croatia suffer heartache in their second consecutive Final after the 2018 World cup.
Spain have won 3 of the last 4 titles. This is a major step towards performing in the World Cup 2022!

Marcel Schmid - It was a set of friendlies that allowed us to get players back to match sharpness who had not gone to the Euros and then give a few minutes to those returning late. It sets us up nicely for the season ahead.

I have really progressed my save a lot more than I have updated the story.

From now on updates will be bigger in the hope of catching up with myself a bit.

A decent set of results against a mixture of Czech and German clubs. Hopefully everyone is now ready and raring to go for the new season.

Marcel Schmid - It's another chance to get everyone ready for the season, but we know we have to put a good performance in to get the result we want and we did that

Honsak was out on loan last season to develop. We see today that he is a good player and we hope he can continue to put performances in like that for us this year.

1 week until the start of the league season. Austria Wien are one of our title rivals and so we have to start strong.
Whoever wins this will get a real kick start to their season and we want it to be us.

Marcel Schmid - We never got into our rhythm and we need to find that quick because our next game is against Rapid and then midway through the month we have our CL qualifier.

I haven't got much more to say, we have to put this behind us and concentrate on what is next.

After such a big result with the 6-0, Austria Wien have brought you plundering back down to earth there. Hopefully now is the time to pick yourselves back up!

A tough result to take, but hopefully it can act as a bit of a wake-up call or kick up the arse for the players!

Jack and ScottT - After such a good end to last season we lose our first game in about 4 months! I think it's the best time to lose because the players now have that feeling again.

Marcel Schmid - We are very happy to rely on Dominik (Szoboszlai) and Zlatko (Junuzovic) they are both amazing players who are vital to how I want the team to play. This was a huge win for us to forget about last week and we now must push on through August with more big games incoming.



Admira - It isn't what we wanted but i'm always happy with a clean sheet. The problem was not making many chances for ourselves to get shots on goal. Usually we are very productive but we didn't see that today.

Wolfsberger - It's exactly the response wanted after the last game. Chance after chance and we should have put more away.

Now we look towards heading to Israel with confidence. These away ties in Europe are never easy with many upsets, so we won't be that team that takes it lightly. This club wants to be in the CL group stage and we will do whatever it takes.
