A hugely important win for us at this stage of the season! All we can do is keep winning with the margin at only 3 points at the moment.

Now we return home for the first time in a while with a chance to progress to the Champions League SF. We will go out there knowing we have the support of the majority of Austria.

Thank you.
A vital win. It's all about keeping these results coming now!
ScottT - We just have to keep winning.

Real Madrid are in Austria hoping to make it through to their 9th semi-final in 10 seasons!

On the other hand we have Salzburg who are in good spirits after the first leg and they are certainly in with a chance if they get the first goal…

1st half

Salzburg are having the early possession here and the crowd are really up for it. Whenever Madrid have the ball they are booing and whistling, and mistakes are occurring.

Zidane will just want them to settle a bit, they don’t need to rush things. I think if they get to half time and its level, they will see it out.

We are about 10 minutes plus injury time away from half-time, Madrid are starting to settle and make things happen now. Both managers look slightly tense, but Schmid is now the one who would probably like to see it stay like this until the break.

Kroos with a wonderful switch to Asensio who drives at the Salzburg defence, he cuts in and lays it’s off to Hazard who dances around a challenge, the space is opening for a shot but he backheels it through the legs of another defender and Benzema is through one on one against Walke…

40’ It’s a goal of the highest order from Real Madrid. A complete team goal has dazzled the defence of the Austrians 0-1 on the night and 2-5 aggregate!

Salzburg now have to score 3 to go through on away goals but they will be leaving openings and you would expect Real Madrid to finish them off.

HT
The goal came late on in the half, but it was well worth it. Hazard’s wonderful backheel got the away fans standing and Benzema finished with confidence.

You would think Zinedine Zidane can relax now knowing they have one foot in the semis.
2nd Half

We have a change for Madrid at the start of this half, Modric is making way for Dani Ceballos .

Salzburg players are working very hard to win the ball back every time they lose possession and they are winning their fair share of 50/50’s.

We are heading to the hour mark and Ljubicic is on for Schlager and Ludewig is on for Okugawa . It is now or never for Salzburg…

61’ SALZBURG LEVEL! It is Prevljak who reacts quickest after freekick specialist Junuzovic hits the bar, it bounced away from goal, but the Bosnian was there to smash it home and with 30 minutes left they have a real chance.

Zidane reacts to the goal by bringing on Lucas Vázquez for Asensio .
Gümüş is going off for Salzburg’s last change, with another striker coming on in Rafael Leão .

The time has just passed 70’ minutes, so there is still time for some late drama here…

76’ 2-1 Salzburg! They just need 1 more to send Madrid out who are now hanging on for a semi-final place. What a performance in this second half by Salzburg and it’s a brace for Prevljak. It didn’t look like there was room to get a shot off, but he just put his foot through it, and it found the bottom right corner and Ramos is now barking orders at his team, they should have got tighter to him.

In the other game tonight, Liverpool are 2-0 up against Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano where they won their 6th European Cup over a year ago. That one is 5-2 on aggregate to Liverpool, so Klopp will be overseeing a 3rd consecutive semi-final. I think the only thing to cheer about for Atlético fans is their neighbours may also be bowing out at the same stage…

We are into the final few minutes here and Madrid have the ball near Salzburg’s corner flag, they aren’t going to risk giving it away. It’s deafening here tonight; their performance may not be enough.

FT Salzburg 2-1 Real Madrid (4-5 aggregate)

There it is! Real Madrid have once again found their way through without playing particularly well. Zidane will have a lot to ponder before the next opponent, but we have to talk about how good Salzburg were, they pushed the record champions all the way tonight.

Marcel Schmid
– We did everything we could tonight to make the dream a reality, but they just had enough. I think we showed here how far this team has come this season to be competing at this level shows the ambition of the players and a word on the support tonight it was immense. I hope we did everyone who couldn’t make it proud tonight and we will use this to our advantage in the future.

Zinedine Zidane
– Well that was an interesting match ;). We are very happy to have made it through and be a step closer to the final but what a performance by Salzburg tonight. Their counter-press was difficult for us to handle and they didn’t give us many openings to exploit, I wish them well for the future. Well Played!

Thank you :) The investment put in by Red Bull is paying off at the highest level. Hopefully we can continue this next season.
Marcel Schmid Press Conference before Wolfsberger Home tie.

The end is in sight with just 7 games remaining. All season we have had our focus on three competitions and now we have our sights set on the league title. We must use the momentum from that amazing European night to our advantage and get the job done.

I have said previously that we must continue to win and that's all we think about, so we will put everything into the remaining games to get what we want.

Marcel Schmid - A huge victory in the title race made even better by the fact Rapid drew against LASK. This will give us huge confidence in the build up to that game against them in the near future but really we are doing was is necessary in the present. I don't think we need to look too far ahead and say which game is important, they all are now.

Wednesday 22nd

Salzburg 1-0 Altach and Rapid Wien 0-1 Wolfsberger

Salzburg now sit 8 points clear of 2nd place Rapid Wien with the two meeting on Sunday 26th April.

Marcel Schmid - That may well be the biggest victory of the season although we didn't play at our best. I chose to take no notice of the other game until the final whistle, so it was a very big surprise when we heard they had lost.

They will be well up for the game because it is their last chance. We know that a win puts us in the best position yet.
A huge gap has opened between yourselves and Rapid. A victory against your nearest rivals will wrap it up!
A gap is now becoming a chasm thanks to your recent performances, great work!

A win against Rapid would surely be enough to see us retain the title

Rapid are starting to struggle with consistency at the most important stage of the season :)

Marcel Schmid - We started the month with a huge disappointment in the cup but we came back from that with two fantastic performances against one of the biggest clubs on the planet! We have done what we needed to do in the league. I have said before just win and the last two games haven't been the best to view but they meant the most.

We are a very proud team and so our aim is to win the title at the earliest opportunity and that is in the next game. I have told the players I expect nothing less than to be the ones celebrating! :)
