Heartbreak for Stoke as Liverpool knock Potters out
Liverpool advanced to the Quarter Finals of the League Cup, beating Stoke City 3-2 after extra time in the League Cup Fourth Round.
Luis Suarez was the star of the show. The first goal came from him and, although a controversial one, was a delightful finish. Mexican striker Carlos Fierro attempted to feed the ball to Suarez but the pass was intercepted by Stoke's Junior Hoilett. However, the Canadian was pushed to the ground by Suarez and lost the ball to the Uruguayan, who in turn scored from outside the box to put Liverpool 1-0 ahead. The Stoke players called for a foul, but referee Howard Webb gave the goal.
Jelle Vossen then equalized for Stoke and justice seemed to have been served when Irish midfielder Glenn Whelan scored on the hour mark for Stoke.
However the Reds had other plans. Spanish defender Martin Montoya hit an early cross in for Luis Suarez, and Liverpool's star striker danced around the Stoke keeper to score in the 72nd minute.
With the match going into extra time, it was Steven Gerrard, who had recently recovered from injury, who scored a wonderful long-range goal to put his side through into the Quarter Finals - sparking memories of his goal against West Ham in the FA Cup Final in 2006.
