Season 2022/2023: Summer Transfer Window

So after our fantastic season with Vauxhall last term where we qualified for the Champions League, our squad looked almost complete. We were still in need of another winger and a hard tackling defensive midfielder who would help our midfield become even stronger. Let's see how we did in this transfer window.

In total, we sold just one player for £3.5M and released another nineteen players. Ben Purrington, who was sold to Villa, was not a part of my long-term plans and was due to complain about a lack of game time too so I sold him while his value was still high enough. Of the nineteen players released, only Joe Mason and Shane Long were senior players, who got too old. In terms of signings, we signed a total of sixteen players, three senior players and thirteen youth players. The total fee spent was £28.5M. You may be worried that I have bought too much youth over the last couple of seasons, but those youth players who do not make it will be sold for a massive profit, considering the very low fee which each player was signed for.

Senior Squad Signings

These are three signings I am very pleased with. Raheem Sterling is a world class winger with great experience. He will add another dimension to our attack and be a great goal threat for us. Rocha and Luiz were youth players signed who turned out to be too good for the reserves or under eighteens, but not quite ready to play regular first team football. I will have them both tutored and and breed them in slowly. I have a good feeling about these two young stars, they will become big hits.

Reserves & U-18s Signings

I am delighted with the youth I have brought in, there are some very good prospects in there for sure. They were very cheap signings too, which I am pleased with. My youth team is looking very strong right now and I doubt you will find much better around.

Senior Squad

I thought I would show you how my senior squad looks like now. We do have a very young squad (youngest in the league) which has a lot of potential and may become the best in the world give a few years of development.

18. Abdelmemoune Medaci - ST - 18 - 72/91

29. Javier Esnal - ST - 18 - 70/86

The squad is looking very strong right now. I would like to replace Jamie Walker next season, which is something I will take note of. We do lack proper talent up front. Euan Smith has had some injury problems and is on the decline, while both Medaci and Esnal are young and not yet developed to a Premier League standard, let alone Champions League standard. Javier Esnal and Stewart Wallace were promoted to the senior team after playing fantastic football for the U18s team last season. I think that our squad is strong enough to continue challenging for a Champions League spot over the next couple of years. We have a very young squad too and we have many players who have the potential to become world class players. Hopefully we can do very well this season.
Raheem Sterling at his peak. Got to love a bit of that. Great buy :)
who would have though someone called Tony Garbutt could be so good.
@P-KIDDY, hopefully he will perform at his best :)
@The Special one, Garbutt is a boss :P
Nice transfers and update :)

@wellsy1498, yeah I'm hoping we can keep our Champions League place this season :)

@k1rups, yeah I'm hoping Medaci scores a few this season :) Sterling is a great signing for us, I know he will do well :)
Hey Justice!

Just wanted to say thanks for the awesome story!

Your (and everyone else's) in-depth story has gotten me back into Football Manager. Haven't played since I was a little kid on FM 2005, but I'm definitely going to be playing FM 2014. Excellent progress with Vauxhall Motors, keep it up!

All hail Obi Anoruo!

Thanks pal, I'm delighted you are enjoying it :) I'm gonna take a wild guess that your first team to play with on FM14 will be Watford? Anyway, good luck with getting back in to the most addictive game in the world :)

Season 2022/2023: August-December Update

Hey guys, here is the first half update of the 2022/2023 season. Last season was a fantastic season for us as we finished fourth in the Premier League, giving us qualification to the Champions League, and reaching the semi finals of the Europa League.

Going in to this season, finishing in the top four was our aim and we wanted to grow from the experience of playing the Champions League. Hopefully we could live up to our league expectations and solidify our reputation as a Top Four team.

Barclays Premier League

We started the season with a home defeat against the champions Man Utd and we were afraid our early-season fever would return once again. However, we won the next three games before drawing against Reading. We then won the next six games, including impressive wins over Man City and Arsenal, before drawing against West Brom. We then went back to our winning ways with a run of eight consecutive victories, including huge victories over Liverpool and Chelsea. It took Man Utd once again to put us to the sword, as they beat us on the final day of the calender year. In this entire period of time, we conceded just 14 goals and scored 43 goals. At this time last season, we had only scored 19 goals, so we have clearly made huge improvements in our attacking play. We played 21 games in total, with a record of 17-2-2, which is fantastic for any club to achieve. I am delighted with our results and the football we have played.

After our fantastic start to the season, we find ourselves in 1st place! Arsenal are second, just four points behind us and Manchester United our third place by five points, but with a game in hand. We are the third top goal scoring team in the league, and have conceded the second least, which is fantastic for us. I could never have dreamed of us being in first place at this stage. It shows how much my extremely young team has progressed in the last few years.

UEFA Champions League

We faced Napoli in the qualifying play-offs. After winning 2-0 at home, we scored twice in a 2-3 defeat away, which say us go through to the group stages. In a tough group with Barcelona, CSKA Moscow and Olympiakos, anywhere above last place was mission accomplished for us. We managed to beat both CSKA Moscow and Olympiakos twice, and draw twice with Barcelona. Not bad for our debut Champions League season!

We miraculously topped the "Group of Death", with Barcelona finishing second, three points behind us. Our superior goal scoring ability was the factor behind our success. I'm delighted that we managed to progress top of our group, hopefully we can compete in the latter rounds of the world's most coveted club competition.

Capital One Cup

We struggled to penalty wins over Burnley and West Brom in the first two fixtures of the Capital One Cup. Manchester City then defeated us in extra time in the next round, knocking us out of the competition. I'm not too disappointed that we were knocked out, as I do not yet feel that my squad is strong enough to challenge on all fronts just yet.

Player Discussion

  • Goalkeepers: Edward D'Auria has been a superb player for us so far this season, helping us to many cleansheets. He has developed really well over the last year and a half and he still has plenty more potential! I couldn't ask for a more reliable goalkeeper.

  • Defenders: Our defence has been fantastic for us. Emiliano Cervantes and Pejo Susnic have been awesome in the center, with Andersen and Karim both very solid on the flanks. Our other defenders such as Gilhaney, Jefferson Luiz, Massimiliano Manzella, etc, have all been solid when played too.

  • Midfielders: Our midfield triangle of Andrew Casey, Tony Garbutt and Alfredo Pena has been fantastic for us. They have been very consistent for me and deserve to win a league title. Even Gary Gardner has been pushed back to the bench. In terms of wingers, Callum Walker has been absolutely electrifying, scoring and creating many goals. Raheem Sterling and Tom Ince have played very well for us too.

  • Strikers: Abdelmoumene Medaci, our teenage wonderkid, has done so well that he has kept our captain, Euan Smith, out of the team! Medaci has been scoring goals left, right and center and has become one of the first names to go down on the teamsheet. He has been superb.

  • Star Player: It has been very difficult to decide who our best player has been. The likes of Edward D'Auria, Emiliano Cervantes, Pejo Susnic, Tony Garbutt and Abdelmoumene Medaci all deserve it, but ultimately Callum Walker has been our best player. He has scored a few and set up even more goals and has been electrifying. We head in to the January transfer window with Callum Walker being one of the most sought after players, but I will only consider bids of £30M+ for him, and now you will see why.

    Callum Walker's Stats:
    Appearances: 28
    Goals: 8
    Assists: 19
    MotM Awards: 7

    Yellow Cards: 4
    Red Cards: 1

    Pass Completion Ratio: 74%
    Tackles per Game: 4.97
    Fouls Committed: 32
    Fouls Against: 76

    Average Rating: 7.64
