A truly Merry Christmas for The Reds

Liverpool look ever more likely to be crowned champions of England, following some superb performances from The Reds throughout the month of December. Barnes' team some mouth watering football, some may say even better than the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal.

Man City, were Liverpool's first fixture of the month at the Etihad Stadium. Despite Liverpool being ahead in the table, bookies still tipped Man City to win the match. The Citizens were looking for revenge as they had been overtaken and started the game off, straight on the attack. Both teams looked up for the game as their defences were very solid throughout the game. The second half saw both teams having chances but failing to convert, final score, 0-0.

Next up for Liverpool, would be The Magpies at Anfield, in the Capital One Cup quarter final. Liverpool were clearly the favourites but Newcastle were not to be ruled out. Thanks to a brace from Iago Aspas, and a goal from Gerrard and Sturridge, The Reds cruised to a 4-0 victory and booked a semi final vs Chelsea.

Aston Villa, who narrowly escaped relegation last season would have been hoping a win over Liverpool would see them rise on the table. It seems like Paul Lambert, and his men, forgot Liverpool didn't travel to Birmingham to play, they to wanted to win. Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool the lead in the 13th minute, before Suarez doubled the lead 4 minutes later. The Reds will be concerned over the injury Gerrard picked up. The game finished 2-0.

The fixture between Liverpool vs Sunderland would be Paolo Di Canio's last following a poor run of results. Luckily for the Merseyside team, Gerrard's injury wasn't as serious as many thought it was. Despite Liverpool winning 2-0, it was a very boring game for everyone watching. Gaitan and Johnson picked up the goals, as Liverpool gained another three points.

Liverpool vs Everton:

Last season, Liverpool left the Emirates Stadium highly frustrated as they threw away a 2-0 victory as the match ended 2-2. Going into the match, Arsenal were just below Liverpool, a win for The Gunners, would see them overtake Liverpool. Meanwhile, a win for Liverpool would give them a bit of breathing space. Emmanuel Frimpong gave Arsenal the lead in the 11th minute with a pile driver. Just seconds later Cabaye equalised for Liverpool, thanks to some poor defending from Arsenal. From this point onwards, both teams took an aggressive approach. Yellow cards were distributed very frequently, but in the 23rd minute, the game was won, thanks to an Iago Aspas goal. Final score, 2-1.

Just a few days after Christmas, Liverpool were certainly still in a merry mood as they thumped Swansea 6-1. The Reds were 5-1 up in only the 19th minute. Swansea's game plan had been completely overdone. The Swans tried to go all out from the 1st minute, but failed to keep the ball. This lead to Liverpool hitting them on the counter constantly. Daniel Sturridge put in a stunning performance, as he scored a hattrick in just 9 minutes. Martin Skrtel scored a brace and Suarez picked up a goal too as the Swans had been completely annihilated.

In the league, Liverpool are still first place but only one point ahead of Manchester City. Tottenham are 6 points away from Liverpool and so it seems the main competition is between The Reds and The Citizens.

Liverpool player of the month

The Liverpool player of the month is...... Daniel Sturridge! The striker/winger has been in great form this month, especially vs Swansea where he scored a hattrick in 9 minutes. Sturridge will be hoping he can keep up his form to secure a place in the starting lineup.
The league is there for the taking. Keep going and make sure you finish in the top 2 now :P

Liverpool splash the cash!

Liverpool have stunned millions with their latest signing, as the club confirmed the signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for a fee of 34 million. Throughout the season, one place Liverpool have been short in numbers, is the midfield. Barnes will be hoping that Ozil can fill up that gap and add quality to the side. The German international will be earning 140 k p/w as he signed a three year contract with the club.

Ozil, had been relegated to Madrid's Castilla squad following a scrap between himself and new boss Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian felt Ozil was surplus to requirements, especially after the signings of Illaramendi and Isco. Shortly after this, Ozil handed in a transfer request which was accepted but perhaps he was overpriced as no other club came in for him but Liverpool. The midfielder made a total of 71 appearances for Los Blancos, however scoring only 10 goals.

During his time at the club, Ozil only won two trophies. The Spanish cup in 2011 and the La Liga in 2012. He is blessed with creativity and flair, two things Liverpool have been searching for, for a while. Ozil is also a great passer of the ball and a fantastic team player. Central midfield is not his only position, as he can play as an attacking midfielder, his favoured position or as a right/left winger, a fairly versatile player.

In a pre-match interview for the semi-final of the Capital One Cup, versus Chelsea, Barnes was asked what he felt about Ozil.

"He's a brilliant player with a wonderful technique. Just what we need at Liverpool. You know for a while we've lacked a midfielder with that flair and technique, however a player who is not overconfident, that's Ozil for you. I contacted him personally and he said he would love to join such a historic club. We're glad to have him here."

Next Barnes was asked if he would feature Ozil in the match tomorrow:

"Why not? Steven's out of the game because of his injury, so this would be the perfect time for him to feature. Even though he's just recovered from a minor thigh strain, I feel he's match fit and raring to go. He may opt otherwise."

Many footballing fans will be wondering why Ozil moved to Liverpool and would consider the move as a step down in his career. Those fans could be right in their thinking, however maybe Ozil moved because he saw the direction the club is moving into. Despite the decline of the standard of English football, and the improvement of the standard in football in other European countries such as Spain and Germany. The premier league is still the best league in the world. Who would turn down a chance to play in such a league? Especially if you're desperate to leave the club.

So as Barnes said it, Ozil is set to feature in tomorrow's Capital One Cup semi final vs Chelsea. It will be interesting to see how he plays in the red jersey of the mighty Liverpool. If he plays. For more information on the signing of Ozil, you can get it here, on sky sports news.
