Tactics & The Wide Centre Back
The most talked-about change to tactics is the introduction of the player role ‘Wide Centre Back’ (WCB).
Operating on either side of a back three, this role performs the same defensive tasks as its partners but also looks to venture into a full back role and provide support from there when your team is in possession of the ball.
There are options to play more conservatively or more expansively with this role, and it certainly aids attacking with an added body providing an outlet and a source of chance creation.
I found my WCB (Calum Chambers) in very advanced positions when we had possession of the ball and he provided a number of deliveries into the box, whether they be lofted through balls or crosses.
Be warned – this role means your backline can be exposed on the counter so make sure you have a midfielder who can sweep up in behind if/when necessary!
Another change for Tactics is the removal of the green/red boxes from the line-up graphic on the Tactics page.
These can now be found by clicking the ‘Analysis’ button, which helps to show what areas of the pitch your line-up and shape covers, and what areas are left uncovered or weak.
Useful if you’re unsure about changing your shape, but not really a massive change.
