Dunlop Returns to Check Up on Wolfsburg After Not Knowing Rest of Season Results
Wolfsburg favourite Alexander Dunlop has today returned to the club after being away for the last 6 months. He has not known any results or how they have gone, and this article will be to inform him on how his club has gone since he left and handed the rein to Mourinho.
The Bundesliga
For the second year in the row, Wolfsburg finished in the top 3, but before we tell you the final positions, I am going to give you the scenario that Wolfsburg were in heading into the last week of games. Bayern Munich were playing 4 hours before Wolfsburg, Bayern were 2 points ahead of Wolfsburg.
Bayern were shocked in a 1-1 draw at home against already Relegated Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg would just have to beat Hannover 96 to win the league.
But unfortunately they could not score any goals and Bayern Munich would celebrate another victory.
The results after Dunlop left
But despite this narrow loss, Wolfsburg would still win many awards in the Bundesliga. Despite leaving the club at the end of February, due to all his hard work, Dunlop still won the Manager of the Year for the second year in a row. The Goalkeeper of the year was Wolfsburg's 22 Year Old German, Timo Horn, who beat Neuer and Trapp. Kevin De Bruyne was runner up in German footballer of the year. Ricardo Rodriguez was awarded the player's player of the year. These awards resulted in De Bruyne, Horn and Rodriguez all being in the team of the year.
German Cup
When Dunlop left the club, he left them shortly before their teams German Cup Quarter Final game against Augsburg, which they won 1-0. They would then go on to qualify for the final by beating Borussia Dortmund, in a great 1-0 win.
This set them up for a grand final game against Werder Bremen, and their tendency to fall short at the final hurdle came back to haunt them, as they could not score in the 120 minutes and then lost on penalties, despite Horn saving four of them.
Champions League
Wolfsburg were also about to play PSG in the Champions league prior to Dunlop's departure, but I do not think that much would stop PSG from beating Wolfsburg 4-0 on aggregate.
Juventus would go onto win the trophy.
