Championship Round Format

Points obtained during the regular season are halved but teams keep the rest of their stats. i.e. Goals scored.

Rapid finished on 51 points, this is rounded down to 25 in the playoff.
Salzburg finished on 50 points, this is halved to 25 in the playoff.

If both teams where to end on the same amount of points at the end of the season, Rapid would be awarded 1/2 a point because their total (51) was rounded down from the regular season.
Two really important results. Looking forward to the challenge of Real Madrid, I bet. ;)

The team is ready for the challenge ahead!

ÖFB Cup semi-final
15:30 kick-off at the Waldstadion for this cup semi-final, Salzburg are taking on LASK. It is a very important month for the Austrian champions as they look to reach the cup final, face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final and retain their league crown…

LASK have reached their first cup final for 21 years after Samuel Tetteh’s goal in the 30th minute which was enough to win the tie for LASK who will face Rapid Wien in the final 5th May. That goal was enough to repay the €250k spent to bring him in from Salzburg after a 6 months loan in the 2018/19 season.

LASK have won the cup once in their history in 1965 against Wiener Neustädter.

Marcel Schmid – We have struggled against LASK every time this season and then contained us very well again. We were very close to scoring early on but once they got the goal they defended well. I did expect this and told the players to be ready for them to sit back if they get the first goal, but we didn’t do enough in the end and we are all disappointed.

The players can’t feel hard done by because we have to move and make the most of being able to face Real Madrid. This is not an opponent you get to face every season so we will have to put our all into it.

Some people will have their opinion thinking we weren’t interested in this game, well all I can say is they are wrong. I set the team up to win this game today I didn’t plan to take this one lightly to be ready for the Madrid game because it’s a semi! The club craves trophies and I want to be the one to bring more in, so that’s my aim for the remainder of the season.
A disappointing defeat, but I'm sure the cup was the least of your priorities.

It's safe to say a CL quarter-final is a bigger achievement than getting to the cup final

We are here at the Santiago Bernabéu tonight for the Champions League quarter-final of Real Madrid vs Red Bull Salzburg.

The Madridistas are very confident going into this one and quite rightly as they have been here many times before (13x Champions).
They will have to get over last season failings against so called 'lesser opposition' when they went out in the last 16 against Ajax (3-5), the 1-4 humbling here was the surprise of the competition.
Zidane who won it 3x in a row in his last stint will be confident they can progress.

Salzburg went out in the play-offs against Red Star Belgrade, and they don't have the experience of going this far in the competition.

It's going to be a very interesting affair!
A huge night in the club's history... regardless of the result, it will live long in the memory of the supporters.

Agree mate. Whatever happens it will be very good experience for everyone

1st Half

We are a few minutes into this one and Real Madrid are dominating like you would expect at home. Will Salzburg have the defensive solidity to cope with their attack?

20’ It’s Diogo Jota with the goal. Vey simple play but effective and Real get the relatively early goal to give them confidence.

24’ That didn’t take long! There hasn’t been time to report anything else, Salzburg had the ball for a few minutes in the final third but couldn’t find a way through. The ball was the given away and Madrid showed them how it is done, Marco Asensio smashes one from just outside the area. Stunning!

As we work our way towards half time Salzburg look to have stepped things up a little. Marcel Schmid is barking instructions to his team on the side-lines, he doesn’t look very happy right now.

40’ There it is the away goal Salzburg need. It’s the two main men for the Austrians, Junuzovic and Szoboszlai combine before the latter dribbles past the final Real Madrid defender and tucks it in. What a fantastic goal from the visitors.

HT
The last ten minutes of that half Salzburg came into it, Zidane may need to tweak something before the 2nd half.

2nd Half

Well this half really hasn’t come to life; I’m sure Salzburg would love it to stay like this and Real Madrid aren’t doing a lot to threaten.
We are an hour in now and the fans are getting restless, that is promptly followed by 2 subs for Madrid. Bale and Odriozola come on for the goalscorer Asensio and Militão.

67’ MODRIC! The substitutes perked Madrid up and it’s the veteran Luka Modric who gets the goal to make it 3-1. Patient play again by Madrid and they just work an opening and Modric was in the box waiting to tap it in.

73’ Benzema with his 4th of the campaign makes it 4 and Salzburg are now clinging on for dear life in this one. Predatory instincts from the Frenchman who waited for the Salzburg defence to switch off from marking him and one touch and in. Real know what they are doing from this position.

77’ Well this is interesting. Kilian Ludewig from the bench gets on the score sheet with what could be a vital goal in this tie. Schmid is telling his players to get forward he wants another! He took the chance from quite a distance and Courtois didn’t know if another attacker may get a touch so just stood still…

The clock is ticking down and finally the Salzburg players look to just pass the ball around. The ref looks at his watch and let’s play carry on…

We are about 2 minutes over time now and finally he blows up.

FT Real Madrid 4-2 Red Bull Salzburg

Marcel Schmid – It’s a fantastic result in the end for us, we can always really on Kilian (Ludewig) to come off the bench and make an impact and he did exactly that. I think we struggled with their pace on the counter, I was looking for us to get into the tackle, but we dropped off a bit too much, but we have to be happy. When they made it 4, I thought we were going to find it hard to do anything in the last 20 but we actually got better.

We always believe in ourselves and our home form is very good so we will go out and have nothing to lose. We are very glad to still be in with a shout and that’s credit to the players who just don’t give up.

A late goal certainly claws back some hope for Salzburg to do the unthinkable and defeat Real Madrid to progress. A respectable and admirable result, all things considered.

All we need is a little hope.
Two away goals may prove vital, despite the scoreline. Win 2-0 and you're through!

It puts us in with a chance at least
