Liédson: "They Want Revenge"
Sporting Clube de Portugal icon Liédson has warned the current Sporting to be wary ahead of the first Lisbon derby of the season, claiming Benfica will want revenge for the five defeats Sporting inflicted on them last season. Liédson played for the Verde-e-Brancos for eight years between 2003-11, netting 173 goals in 313 games for Sporting, and will certainly know a thing or two about derbies, having played in several Derby da Segunda Circular matches himself.
Speaking to a newspaper back in his native Brazil, the 35-year-old spoke about the upcoming derby match. "There's derbies everywhere in the world every day, but for me, the Lisbon one is special. I played here for eight years, and in derbies like this. Last season was great for Sporting. Not only the domestic and continental success, which has continued into this season, but also the five derby wins against Benfica. That's amazing, and gives the bragging rights to Sporting, but this season is different. They had all summer to improve, and they want revenge for the five losses. We didn't exactly improve hugely in the summer, so we need to be wary not to think we are too good to beat them. Benfica are a very good team, we can't forget that. However, Matthaus is a very good manager, and if we do end up victorious it could set the tone for another very good domestic season."
Sporting play Benfica at their own ground in their next match just two days after their latest Champions League game, away to Galatasary. This means it is being billed as a tight encounter by pundits, but following victories over Barcelona and Juventus, Sporting fans will be confident they can pull off a sixth derby victory in a row.
