So on the 9th of September we had to play against Westham on The Boleyn Ground, and in all fairness it was a poor game from our side, West ham dominated most of the 1st half of the game and managed to get a 1-0 lead just before half time. After a slight tactical change and a big shout in the dressing room the team started to create chances in the 2nd half and played way better. Eventually this lead to the 1-1 in the 71st minute and 7 minutes later Morumbi scored his 2nd goal to make it 1-2.

Against PAOK for the Champions League group stage, we showed a glimpse of how good we can actually be on the field. We dominated both halves of the game had over 86% passes completed and more than 65% possession by the end of the 1st half we were already 3-0 ahead thanks to Morumbi and Ronald. In the 2nd half El Amrani scored from a corner and near the end Ronald scored his 2nd goal to end the match with 5-0.

On the 16th we had Reading visit us at Bierstekers Stadium. And it was another match in which we created a lot of chances and even though we were dominating most of the game the score stopped at 2-0. So even though I was happy with how we played I was a bit frustrated with the lack of goals we seem to score.

Aston Villa was next and we again played at our own Stadium, Aston Villa actually played very well against us and by the end of the matches, the chances both sides created was 10-8 but thanks to a penalty and a good solo action from Polverino we managed to grab the win here. Something else which made me sort of happy after this match was our passing and possession, 77% possession and 90% passing at the end of the match. So the tactic is working well on one end but is lacking a bit on the other at this moment.

Our next match was against Tottenham who have promoted back into the PL this season, which is where they belong according to my opinion. But one thing is certain they aren’t the team they were 10 years ago, they only managed to create one chance during the entire match while we actually were able to create quite a lot of good chances. The score ended in 3-0 for us thanks to Marilia and Agosto with a header from the corners Morumbi took and Morumbi himself rounded up a nice team effort.

Our next stop was in Belgrade, we had to play against Partizan for the Champions League group stage, and what happened here is a display of what good defending and counter attacks can bring you against a better opponent. Partizan came to a 3-0 Lead within 30 Minutes, and only had 3 chances up till that point but they made them count. After that Ramon scored the 3-1 for us from a penalty. But that wasn’t enough, after half time we tried everything we could to score at least 2 goals to end the game in a draw but with a total of 18 chances for us and 3 for them the game still ended 3-1.

Back in England we faced Fulham for the last game of the month September, and here we yet again showed we can be dominant in a game and grab the win. With 6-15 in chances and more than 65% possession we won the match with 0-2. The coming period I will try to use to increase our sharpness in front of goal, because this is getting frustrating, dominating a game, creating a lot of chances but the ball just isn’t going into the goal.
Very unfortunate loss against Partizan, otherwise a strong month, things are looking bright as ever in the red half of Manchester :)

Unlucky.. At least it wasn't at our stadium!

Matches played in October

Manchester United 1 – 1 Liverpool

Manchester United 6 – 0 Olympique Lyonnais

West Brom 0 – 3 Manchester United

Manchester United 2 – 0 Norwich

Manchester United 3 – 1 Aston Villa

Monthly Review

On the 14th of October we finally had to play again, our opponents were one of our biggest rivals Liverpool. The game ended with a 1-1 after a late equalizer from Jan de Vries in the 85th minute after Sabino put Liverpool 0-1 ahead in the 30th minute of the match. If we look at the game statistics we once again were unlucky this match, 10 shots versus 1 and 65% possession.

The next match was against Lyon, who we defeated earlier in August during our friendly competition. Today however it was a match for the Champions League group stage. After the first half it was 1-0 due to a goal from Castillo in extra time, but I wasn’t happy with our performance 5 vs 3 chances and 50-50 possession. After an angry team talk during Half Time and 2 chances of players we managed to play way better, the game ended 5-0 with 22 chances for us and 60% possession. Lyon never had a decent chance in the 2nd half and ended the game with the 3 chances from the 1st half.

On the 21st of October we had to play West Brom, they actually played very well and the chances of winning the game were 50-50 but due to 2 quick goals from Morumbi during the 2nd half we managed to grab a 0-3 win. Possession was 50-50 after the final whistle and 8-12 in chances.

We had to play against Norwich in the 4th round for the Capital one Cup after we managed to beat Aston Villa a month ago. We were in control of the match for most of the time, but just weren’t able to score the goal we needed to go through to the next round. It was for a great individual effort from Deumelandt that brought us the 1-0 just before the final whistle, during extra time he also made the 2nd goal of the match. I also used the match to grant some young players a chance but this might not have been such a good idea.

The last match of October was against Aston Villa, the match started a bit hectic because in the 3rd minute we already got a penalty, but Morumbi hit the post, he was able to score in the rebound however so it wasn’t too bad he missed the penalty in the 1st place. In the 2nd half we got another penalty this time Morumbi didn’t fail and scored it brilliantly, 3 minutes later Allman rounded up a nice team effort to get us to a 3-0 lead. This is where we might have slowed down a bit too much, because Aston Villa managed to score the 3-1 just before the end of the match.
Superb update Randy. Loving the story so far, keep it up :)

Monthly Review

Our 1st match of November was on the 1st of the month against Olympique Lyon, for the group stage of the Champions League. We had to win this one to make sure we would be in a good position to place ourselves for the knockout stages of the Champions League. The game started quite bad for us after 8 minutes Munteanu already scored the 1-0 for Lyon, 10 minutes later Lyon were given a penalty cause of a slight mistake from Agosto, Barnett missed the penalty however and this kept the score at 1-0.

3 Minutes later Gregory Groenendijk scored with a header and made the equalizer 1-1, after this moment we tried everything we could to score a 2nd goal, however we went into half time with the score still 1-1. In the 2nd half we yet again started our search for the 2nd goal, which eventually was scored by Agosto in the 67th minute when he managed to head the ball in after a great corner from Morumbi. This was also the FT score 1-2 for us and 3 important points for our qualification.

3 days after the game against Lyon we had to play against Stoke for the PL, due to the important match against Lyon a lot of our players were given a bit of rest. The start of our match against Stoke was pretty good after only 13 minutes we already scored the 1-0 so that looked quite promising, the game changed quite drastically in the 30th minute however, Ramon was given a red card after he presumably gave an elbow to one of his opponents. From this moment on Stoke put us under pressure to get the best out of their small benefit of an extra player on the pitch. Luckily enough we went into HT with the 1-0 score!

After I made clear we could still win with only 10 people on the field who were all individually 3x as good as the Stoke players, the team went onto the pitch with new confidence. After 8 minutes Neville Allman scored the 2-0 for us and only 2 minutes later Deumelandt scored the 3-0 for us, after that moment we slightly relaxed a bit and tried to control the game till the end. But the 3-0 wasn’t enough for the players and in the 80th minute the launched another impressive attack in which Castillo managed to score the 4-0.

Our next match was against PAOK for yet another match in the CL group stage, during the 1st half we already showed we were the better team in this match, but once again our finishing wasn’t the best of the best, so why I was happy with the performance of the players, I was unhappy at the same time with the lack of goals and the trouble we have with putting the bloody ball into the back of the net.

During the 2nd half we continued with our dominating style of play and we finally managed to score the 0-1 in the 56th minute when Deumelandt managed to round up a great solo effort. Slightly later in the match Morumbi showed why he has been chosen as the Ballon D’Or winner for the past 4 years, with great combinations between him and Deumelandt they thorn apart the entire defense of PAOK and eventually Morumbi put it in with a nice placed shot. Paok did score a goal slightly later however so the score was 1-2 at this point, but we managed to keep the score this way till the final whistle.

Our next opponents were Millwall who haven’t been doing too great in the competition up to this point, but who knows what they might achieve against us? Well already within a minute they were 0-1 behind after Velez scored a very nice goal, and while we kept on trying to create more chances it took us till the 21st minute before Ceballos scored our 2nd goal of the match. It got even worse for Millwall only 9 minutes later when Morumbi scored the 3-0, yet this wasn’t enough and only another 7 minutes later Velez scored his 2nd goal of the match and the 4th for our team. From this point on we slowed down and played more on possession and keeping our lead as it was. After HT Millwall did however manage to create 3 chances but they either went wide or were saved by Palomeque.

On the 22nd of November (1 day after my birthday) we had to play against Swindon and while the team tried to make a show of it as a present for me we didn’t get further then a 0-3 score. We yet again opened the game with a quick goal from Velez, who tucked it in only 4 minutes into the game. And while the team kept on creating another great amount of chances it took us till the 20th minute before Jan de Vries managed to lob the ball into the far corner to score the 0-2. It stayed 0-2 till half time but with all the chances we managed to create up till that point it could have been 0-4 as well.

During HT I decided to switch a few players for talents which earned some play time in order to impress me, and even though they did pretty well, the amount of chances we created during the 2nd half decreased quite a bit. However in the 73rd minute it was Flynn who managed to put in a great header after Morumbi took the corner to score the 0-3. And while the team did everything they could to get another one in after this point, the score stayed 0-3.

Next game was against Southampton, and while we were seen as the favorites to win this game, we didn’t really manage to live up to those expectations. Soton didn’t have a great start and this allowed us to score the 0-1 only 10 minutes into the game, the goal came from our german wonderkid Grimm who replaced Morumbi who had a slight injury. But only 13 minutes after his goal Grimm got injured by a reckless tackle from one of the Soton defenders, so that was the end of his match. After Grimm was replaced Soton started to play even more offensive and aggressive, which gave them a slight advantage but they didn’t manage to score a goal before HT.

I told the team to push a bit more so we could score the 0-2 so we were a bit safer from the pressure that Soton was putting on us. And while the team tried to get near the goal of Soton to tuck in the 0-2 it was Ratko Martin for Southampton in the 64th minute who scored the 1-1. After this goal both sides came close to score the 2nd goal to secure the win, but when the final whistle was blown, the scoreboard still showed a 1-1 score.

Our last match of November was against Partizan, so were we going to be able to take revenge for the 3-1 defeat earlier this year? well again it ended up to be a tough nut to crack. Ceballos opened the score in the 3rd minute 1-0 for us, so this was a good sign, but a quick start doesn’t always puts you in a luxurious position. After 45 minutes of game time the score was still only 1-0 while we did have 60% possession and created 10 chances in the 1st half.

In the 2nd half we yet again were searching for another goal, but the defense of Partizan once again was hard to crack, every single way we tried to get through or near the goal resulted in nothing. At the end of the match we almost had 70% possession, 20 chances created a pass completion of 85% but the score still was 1-0, it was a win how ever so I was happy about that, but my respect goes to the Partizan defense which kept us from scoring more.
dirty Soton defenders, injuring Grimm like that, tut tut

On the 2nd of December our rivals from London (Arsenal) were the ones we had to beat for the Premier League, it would turn out to be a very close game and the game could have ended in a win for both sides. The 1st half of the game wasn’t a very good one, we made a lot of fouls and a lot of our chances were wasted. But while we didn’t score we did keep the ball in possession so Arsenal couldn’t do much either.
The 2nd half was just 7 minutes old when Greg Donaldson scored the 0-1 for Arsenal it was there 4th shot of the game versus the 10 we already had so far. In the 69th minute Velez scored the 1-1 with a fantastic volley after ormaetxea crossed the ball from the right side into the penalty area. 9 minutes later A. Ceballos scored the 2-1 which gave us the lead over Arsenal, in the final 12 minutes neither we nor Arsenal were able to get close to the goal.

On the 6th of December it was time to play against Swansea for the quarter final of the Capital one Cup. We got an early lead when Cristian Hernandez scored a great goal from 30M away. After this goal both sides had equal chances of scoring a goal, we went into half time with 6-6 in chances and with a 0-1 lead for us.
In the 2nd half Swansea went for a more aggressive style which gave them a slight advantage over us, they were more threatening infront of goal and intercepted quite a few of our passes. In the 84th minute of the game it was Daniel Palmer who brought Swansea alongside us with a great header after they were allowed to take a corner. Due to this goal we had to go into extra time. In the extra time it was Nick van Hoeven who scored the 1-2 for us after we finally managed to get through their defense.

Next up was Everton who we had to beat to stay 1st in the PL title race. Right from the start we were the more dominating team, creating chance after chance but it took us until the 30th minute before Morumbi scored a nice close goal after out playing 3 defenders. And while we kept on attacking and controlling the match, we weren’t able to score another goal before half time.
After half time we continued were we left off, and were creating a lot of chances which resulted in a penalty only 5 minutes into the 2nd half, the penalty was taken by Velez who put it in the right upper corner without hesitation, 3 minutes later Velez scored his 2nd goal of the match and brought us a 3-0 lead. After this we just kept control of the match and didn’t really create any big chances anymore so the game ended in a 3-0 win.

Next up was atlas from Mexico, we had to play against them in the Semi Final of the Fifa Club World Cup. We were given a penalty only 4 minutes into the game and Morumbi scored it without any trouble. In the 22nd minute it was yet again Morumbi who scored a goal for us, this time after a great team effort which he rounded up very nicely. After the 2nd goal we weren’t really able to score or create anything decent.
The 2nd half wasn’t much different from the 1st half we did try to create chances or go forward but it ended up in failures or shots that went wide. So the score stayed 2-0 till the end of the match.

The game against Santos will get a special review.

Next up was Norwich (again) for the Premier League match. We had a great start with Russo scoring the 0-1 in the 6th minute, but after this goal the team already started to take it all too easy, playing the ball around keeping possession and not creating anything, this resulted in the score still being 0-1 when we went into half time.
After I made clear I expected them to actually do something useful in the 2nd half, we immediately scored the 0-2 in the 47th minute, and while the team did try to create a lot more than before the score stayed only 0-2 cause most shots went wide or were saved by the keeper. Norwich never came close to creating a chance and only had a shot from 25M that went over.

On the 27th of December one of the biggest fixtures of the year was going to take place, we had to play against Manchester City the last time we played against them it was a 1-2 win for us so another win would be nice. The start was a bit slow, we had possession but couldn’t really create anything with it, same for city when they had the ball they tried to get forward but stranded halfway. Until the 29th minute when Rothwell was able to score a great goal from the edge of the penalty area when he got the ball back from Leon 1-0! Right after the kick off Allman was able to intercept the ball and pass it to Leon, who created a bit of space and passed it back to Alman who then scored the 2-0! 5 minutes later it was Leon who scored the goal instead of giving the assist, so in a total of 7 minutes we extended our lead from 0-0 to 3-0 which was also the score at half time.
During the 2nd half City was close to scoring a goal but both their chances were saved by our keeper. After that we took control again and it was Allman who scored the 4-0 in the 60th minute of the match. After this goal we took it easy again and defended our lead till the end.

Last game was against Burnley for the Fa Cup. I thought this match would be a great moment to give some of the youth players a chance, but this almost ended up to be a disaster. While the youngster did play quite well and kept possession while creating quite a chunk of chances, it was oldy Polverino who scored the 1-0 for us in the 37th minute. We couldn’t enjoy our lead for long though since Wilkinson scored the 1-1 5 minutes later which was Burnleys 1st real chance of the game.
In the 2nd half it was Ngcobo who scored the 2-1 for us in the 62nd minute of the match so once again we had the lead. After yet a few chances it was Fomin in the 80th minute who scored the 3-1 for us, so the win would be safe (you would think). In the 90th minute Marshall scored the 3-2 for Burnley and in the remaining 3 minutes Burnley were able to create 3 more chances but luckily enough they didn’t manage to score another goal.
