Paul Hewson: European football excites me

Paul Hewson: "We have a very early start to the season this year with Europa League qualifiers coming our way. Despite starting our competitive football a few weeks before we usually do, I am confident that we have been able to prepare properly for this tie and that we can play to the best of our potential. Match fitness will not be an issue, I can guarantee that.

The prospect of playing European football excites me, and I can't wait to start our European campaign. People say that the Europa League is 'unimportant' or 'the poor man's trophy', but it is still a massive, massive competition. When you look at the teams who have won it in the past, such as Liverpool, Milan, Bayern, Inter, Zenit, Atletico, etc, there are some fantastic teams competing in this competition. It is still European football and it is still a major competition, and I am delighted to be taking part in it.

Our first opponent is SV Ried. As a manager, I did as much research on what they are about, how they play, and who plays for them. They are a very good side from Austria and we will certainly not get complacent, just because we are a team from the English Premier Division. They got in to the competition at the same stage as us and they will be treated as our equals in that regard. There are no easy ties in this competition, but I can guarantee that my team will put 110% in to every game."

Europa League Third Qualifying Round: 1st Leg

We were to begin our Europa League campaign away from home in the first leg of the Europa League third qualifying round. Our opponent was SC Ried of Austria. We were the firm favourites for the tie but we were looking to go out to Austria and claim a couple of away goals to destroy any confidence they had going in to this tie. Due to my squad still looking a touch incomplete, I made sure to start the best players I could to get us a win in Austria.



So we won the match by a very comfortable score line of 3-0. Emiliano Cervantes was our star man, scoring two goals but having his hat-trick opportunity from the penalty spot denied by SV Ried keeper Jawad Bah. Gary Gardner was also very lethal from range, hitting the woodwork a number of times before he got his name on the scoresheet. All in all, a good result which we can be pleased with.



As you can see, we really did dominate the game. 28 shots to 5 is a very impressive stat on our part, and not to mention we had 62% of the possession. Our passing was very good, completing 87% of our passes and we had a team average rating of 7.50, which is very impressive. I am delighted with how we played and how we dominated the game and I cannot wait for the second leg.

Absolutely loving this story justice.

One quick question, When you got your new stadium how did you get the image of it into the game? Now I have a new stadium I just have an image of some white seats. I don't know my new stadiums ID so can't change the picture in the graphics folder.

Any guidance will be must appreciated.

Summer 2021: Long signs for The Motormen

Vauxhall Motors earlier today confirmed the signing of yet another player. This time the player was Republic of Ireland and West Brom legend, Shane Long. The veteran striker became Hewson's seventh senior signing when he was signed on a free transfer. The striker signed a one year deal with the club, with a clause that if he features in twenty leagues games this season, an extra year is added on to his contract.

The legendary Irish striker certainly has a Premier League pedigree to match any. Cork City's superstar youngster, Shane Long, made the move from Cork to Championship side Reading in 2005, when he was aged just 18. He helped Reading reach promotion to the Premier League in his first season, where he became a first team regular. After two seasons in England's elite competition, Reading were relegated back to the Championship and Shane Long stuck it out for four more seasons before the big move came. West Brom had brought the young, pacey striker back to the Premier League for a sum of £5.5M. His first two seasons with The Baggies were average for him, scoring 8 league goals in each season. From then on, however, it all seemed to click in to place for him. Long scored over twenty league goals in three consecutive seasons for The Baggies and quickly became a fan favourite. He became a very consistent goal scorer for both club and country and by the end of last season, Shane Long had scored 147 goals in the Barclays Premier League in his career. He left West Brom on a free transfer when they were relegated and Paul Hewson signed him to be a back-up striker for Vauxhall star and captain, Euan Smith. Long may not have his pace anymore, but he is still as clinical as any and his off-the-ball movement is top class. He is still one of the best natural goalscorers in the league and will be a big hit with the Vauxhall faithful.
