Along both side walls of the mortuary were freezers banked together, used to store bodies of the deceased. In one of these, the body of Lothar Matthaus was lying, being preserved ready to be transported back to Germany for his funeral. Suddenly, there was a groan from his freezer. Was life stirring inside?
Is the doctor German by any chance?
A New Chapter - Part Two
Written from the point of Matthaus...
I groaned, and tried to move, to sit up, but I couldn't. I tried to think what had happened. I remember knocking myself unconscious in my car, but nothing else. Then it occurred to me. I must have lost control and had a crash. So where was I now? The hospital? I forced myself to think, then I realized how cold it was. Why? How can it be so cold? I forced myself to open my eyes, and looked around. Then it hit me. I was in a freezer.
My brain must still have been going on the slow side, because I couldn't remember what they used these for. I thought hard for a good few minutes, then suddenly, I remembered. They're used to score the corpses of the deceased. But what was I doing in here?
Suddenly, I realized. I must have been in a bad way after the accident, and the paramedics who treated me must have made a mistake, and pronounced me dead. I hate to think what my family must be feeling like now. Those paramedics have to be dealt with, but not now. There is only one thing that mattered.
I was alive.
I knew I had to get out of here. I flipped myself over, and banged the freezer door as hard as I could. I was pounding on the door for a good ten minutes before finally I heard footsteps outside. I heard a key being put in the lock, and then turning. The door swung open, and there stood a doctor, with a look of the shock of his life on his face.
"Lothar! You're alive?!" he said.
"Yes, it seems so! Can I get out of here now?" replied Matthaus.
"Yes, yes, of course you can. Here, get out and we'll warm you up. I've never seen this happen before!"
"I tell you what, those paramedics messed up big time. How is the news being treated?"
"Everyone is in mourning, they're gutted. You've touched so many people. What will you do now?"
"I don't know. If Milan still want me, I'll stay there, but I can understand their concerns. I feel fine though, so hopefully I'll keep my job."
"Ok, well I'll leave you here to recover and warm up, come find me when you're feeling better, and we'll inform your family."
"Brilliant, thanks for the help doctor. I'll be up and about soon."
If any of you are wondering what the point of the last three updates was, I'll tell you. The first one was a genuine attempt to end this story. It's becoming very frustrating in recent weeks, but I didn't want to end this story for anything, and I immediately regretted it. Hence the two updates after it. I don't care if it doesn't make sense. I had to do something.
