April-May: The Curtains Close
It's been quite a run for us in our debut season in the Liga Revoluçao, but in these last two, short months, the curtains closed on the league season and teams battling out at the head or foot of the table would know their fate.
This is the draw for this month. We've got a very easy run in and if all else goes to plan, there is a slight chance we could nip in to that second promotion place!
April-May Results
In short, not the desired result. A 1-0 loss to bitter rivals
Atlético CP meant the fans and I went home unhappy because in truth it was a horrible performance and we cannot accept it even if we aren't meant to be up the table challengin for promotion.
The second game - well that was even worse. And, if you didn't think it could get
any more worse, all three goals came in the first half. We just lost the plot, really, and we threw away our promotion ambitions that game.
That all but confirmed the promotion race. There wasn't much left to play for really, so I decided that I'd rotate the squad a bit for the two final games, against
Sp. Covilhã and
Freamunde.
Last time around these fixtures we were in red hot form and won both of these games comfortably. Now it was time to turn our bad form around and try and finish the season on a positive note. It was just after the Penafiel debacle a win seemed miles away.
A slight change in tactics did the trick against
Sp. Covilhã and we edged a tight game. The scoreline was echoed in the the following game against
Freamunde. I was glad we were able to win in our last two games as finishing higher = more
cash!
League Table
Final Position: 5th
The little blip of bad form at the end cost us, but overall I can only say that I am extremely pleased with our progress! We nearly got an incredible double promotion and if it wasn't for the strength of a couple of Primeira Liga calibre teams then we may well have done it. Next year will be interesting to see if we can build on our magical season and make an even bigger bid for promotion!
Next Time...
Seeing as though it's the end of the season, there are no more games to play, but instead there is a transfer window coming around. I have a feeling if we are to take our game to the next level we need to make signings in order to compete - as the likes of
Rio Ave,
Portimonense and relegated teams will make it even tougher.
