Celebrations carried on long into the night in Sydney after Sydney FC defeated arch rivals Melbourne Victory 3-2 to make the Grand Final. Manager Sean-Paul Lodovico was on the brink of tears as the failure-plagued coach will finally have another shot at the championship after 4 years.
The Sky Blues got off to a dream start, when Josh MacDonald dribbled past the keeper and slotted home a second minute goal. Victory couldn't capitalise on chances and Sydney held a 1-0 lead going into the break.
A moment of indecision from Anthony Duzel saw a costly turnover in the box, resulting in an easy goal for Ander Bergara. Just 2 minutes later, Bergara's free kick found MacDonald who doubled his tally and gave Sydney FC an unassaible 3-0 lead.
But Victory didn't give up. After Matthew Jurman was double booked and Sydney reduced to 10 men, they created multiple opportunities but lacked the finish. The breakthrough finally came with Anthony Durand and when Christopher Cristaldo made it 3-2, the Sky Blue defence locked down. With Petkovic and Grant pulled back to make a 5 man defence, Sydney hung on to record a momentous victory.
For the most part of the night, Sydney dominated proceedings and even with 10 men they managed to retain possession. The 2 late goals scared but didn't unsettle the Sky Blues, and the final score of 3-2 was perhaps a tad lucky to the Victory. A dominant victory for Sydney FC, this will see them have a chance at their 4th A-League Championship. They will play Wellington Phoenix in the final.
