Umtiti completes deadline day Dortmund deal
Starlet central defender Samuel Umtiti has departed Ligue 1, leaving Olympique Lyonnais in a €20M deadline day transfer to German giants Borussia Dortmund. Umtiti has put pen to paper on a five year deal worth €30k per week.
In the biggest news so far on this Transfer Deadline Day, Brian Laudrup's Borussia Dortmund have signed Olympique Lyonnais's promising young center defender Samuel Umtiti. Commanding a fairly hefty €20M fee, Umtiti is considered one of the finest young talents that France has produced in the last few years and continues the trend of players leaving Ligue 1 to meet their career aspirations.
Career so far
Umtiti broke into the OL team back in the 2011-2012 season, making 12 appearances as an 18 year old. Since then, the Frenchman has made 70 league appearances for the Lyon-based side and quickly becoming a crowd-favorite. He's also picked up 5 U21 caps and is expected to form a great partnership with Raphael Varane in the future for Les Blues. He'd already made 8 appearances for the club this season before leaving for Germany in the dying hours of the final day of transfer business.
Replacement for Mats Hummels?
After losing Mats Hummels to FC Barcelona following the captain's transfer request, many fans were wondering who Dortmund would use to replace him. With Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Neven Subotic expected to be the main central defensive pairing and Matthias Ginter so far playing in midfield, a new center back was definitely needed to fill Hummels' loss. It seems Brian Laudrup has decided that Umtiti is the man to do so, for the present and many years into the future.
"I'm ready to be a star"
Umtiti has told press at his unveiling that despite his love for OL and everything they'd done for him, he wanted to try himself at a higher caliber club. "Borussia Dortmund are one of the best clubs in the world, a place where I can really grow and reach my potential. I am ready to be a star for this team, and I cannot wait to begin." He will have to fight hard to win a starting spot, but with a five year deal signed, the future seems set for this new BVB talent.
