What To Do?
A last ditch signing in the first window of my reign at the club. Signed without any real scouting knowledge.
Rodrigo Antonio was barely known to any fans around Portugal when he snapped up on a free by us. And what an icon he became, Rodrigo was a fundamental part of our side that was crowned champions of the Terceira Divisao. Playing behind
Antonio Alves in an attacking midfield position as an inside forward, he combined with the Portuguese striker with many goals and assists.
And in the second season when we were in the Segunda Divisao, he played well too. Even if Alves and Balde scored more goals, we didn't find our rythym if Rodrigo wasn't in the side. There is no doubt that he has become an icon of the club and was loved by all the fans, and even was a media favourite.
So when champions
Vitoria Setubal came in with a titanic offer of €60K for his services, I was left with a big decision to make. He was by now 29 years old, passed his peak and I wasn't sure if he was capable of keeping up his level of performances this year, due to fitness. With this money we could bring in a number of youngsters with even bigger potential. I left the email open and looked out of the window of my office.
I mulled over all the various pros and cons of the decision, and then went back to my email. I clicked the reply button and began typing the email. But I still found myself stuck on what to do. This was a
Primeira League team making an offer for his services. Does that mean he is good enough for this level? I didn't think so, so I finally came to my decision, even if it was possibly, if not
the biggest decision in my time here, and so I put it into the email.
..I am accepting your offer for Rodrigo Antonio, and in the process am allowing him to discuss a contract with your club..
I had one last think about the decision, before finally clicking the 'Send' button. I may have just cost us our title hopes, but I may have just one them. Personally, I didn't think that he was good enough for the first division, but then again, we were getting a huge fee for it. I didn't know what impact this would have on our promotion aspirations, but there was only one way to find out.
