Thanks Raphael, means a lot, great to hear you like it! :D

Pre-Season Friendlies

I got to work on scheduling a lot of friendlies for two main reasons: making some small easy profits and also attracting fans from across Lisbon. We were going to also get some morale-boosting matches against little league sides and also some fixtures which would be vital in giving the team a better cohesion and understanding of eachother.

The first game of the pre-season I was hoping to tie up, was against Liga Zon Sagres side Academica. I invited them down to the Carlos Salema and their manager duly accepted, so we agreed upon the date of 8th of July.

Game One: Academica

After that I scheduled a friendly for a little profit and morale raising, against lower league side Peniche. This one would be used to test new tactics, and maybe a family day? This is ideal if we are to attract new fans. I scheduled two Lisbon derbies, as I offered CF Benfica and Sporting's B team to play us. They both accepted, so we had two derbies to look forward to in the pre-season.

Game Four: Sporting CP "B"

Game Five: CF Benfica.

But that was all after our third game of the pre season after Academica and Peniche, was versus last season's champions of the Segunda Divisão, Vitoria Setubal. This was a big game, one that would really be one where the players had an opportunity to win themselves a place in the matchday squad. No doubt, I also wanted to prove myself amongst the newly promoted side, to see how we had progressed.

Game Three: Vitoria Setubal

The last game of pre season was against lowly Juventude Evora. Before that though, we had the Taca de Liga where we had to play FC Arouca, Tondela and finally arch rivals Atletico CP. There was no doubt we had a busy pre-season, but it would prove vital in many different aspects. Team work, tactics, competition, finances and other things too, the last question was: how would we fare?

The Friendlies: Results

We had a very good preseason this year, with games against notable clubs like Academica, Vitoria Setubal and rivals CF Benfica. In the end, we did very well, mustering up some wins and putting in some confident performances. With new tactics implemented, I was looking to see how the players adapted and they did to great effect.

The preseason started at home in Lisbon, versus Liga Zon Sagres outfit Academica. We scored twice in the first half to take a shock lead, before they pulled one back late to make us nervous. Even if it was a friendly, this was a stunning result! I was so proud of the boys and that makes two top division sides we have beaten!

Next up was lower league Peniche. This game was solely for team cohesion, match fitness and adjusting to our new tactics. We knocked the ball around and came back to Lisbon 4-1 winners, a result that was always on the cards. After Peniche, we would face Segunda Divisão champions Vitoria Setubal. The promoted side were too good and came away close 2-1 winners.

After that, we invited rivals CF Benfica to play a friendly. Lots of fans turned up to see a heated encounter, even if it was only a friendly. What happened next stunned me, as we scored five goals while only conceding one at the back! This was a bigger win than I expected, but it was healthy surprise. We had another derby next, this time versus Sporting B. They were in our league, so this would be a good test to see how far we had come in the break. It was a nervy encounter, but we ran our 3-2 winners.

The friendlies took a break, and then we versed Juventude Evora, which should have been a stroll in the park. It was tighter than I first thought, but we still got the win beating them by two goals to one.

One To Watch

I think I may have found an heir to Rodrigo Antonio's throne. His name is Filipe Oliveira. This kid was scoring for fun, and really looked the part. His silky passing and slick movement in the box always caused others havoc, and not only did he make goals, he can certaintly score them too!

Decent Pre-Season! Hopefully Filipe Oliveira continues to evolve as he's at that stage where he should be hungry for games :)

Thanks P-Kiddy :) Yeah, I can tell you, he has been absolutely brilliant this season, twice what Rodrigo Antonio would've offered! Thanks for reading.

Season Three Under Martins Begins

Club: Oriental Lisbon
Manager: Vitor Martins
Last Season: 3rd
This Season: 7th

Last season we were all shocked by Oriental. The little boys from Lisbon's east were surely not enough to achieve their second straight promotion? However, under media-shy manager Vitor Martins, they played well enough to top the table at one point. But the newbies fell off a bit, and ended up narrowly missing our and finishing third.

Although, even after a stunning preseason which included wins against Academica and others whilst they also impressed in the Taca de Liga First Phase, not many are predicting them to go one better, even if the stats say. With Portimonense and Belenesense coming from the Liga Zon Sagres, we already have two teams that easily fit the bill of champions.

And with Joao Paulo Pinto recently stating a desire to join a bigger team, publicly, many think that that could be the cause for unrest in the Oriental camp. Martins will be hoping that his side isn't going to fall into a downward slide before the season has even began.

Martins, however, remains confident of his team's chances, saying that if they could do it last year, they could do it again. Many experts think differently, and with CD Aves, FC Penafiel, Portimonense and a host of others in contention, maybe this season is more of a stepping stone for success rather than actual success.

Anyway, there is only one way to find out, and many fans will still eagerly anticipate their team's first game of the season, and Vitor Martins' third season at the helm. Maybe a tactical surprise or two is in store looking at some of his summer dealings, with much more attacking players being brought into the squad.
Great update! I see what you mean by stepping stone. Trying to stabilise yourself is important rather than sometimes going all out for success and becoming disappointed with the end product. However, I feel you will still get promotion this season :) Penafiel should be your only BIG worry

Thanks :) Yeah, there are lots more contenders this season with Portimonense, CD Aves, Oliveirense and others. And yeah Penafiel are tough but haven't been exceptional, they hired a certain man by the name of Simao as their manager ;)
Nice update, I'm sure you'll get promoted! Can't wait for signings :)

Squad Review

After some transfer dealings, we had finally settled on a squad and eagerly awaited the approach of the new season. I was compiled a team report by Manuel Ramos and I picked some of the key players of our squad out.

I think it is suitable to start at the back of the field. It always helps when you have a strong defence, but when that is backed up by a stellar keeper, that helps too. Bruno Martins is a very capable keeper and should be my main man inbetween the sticks. With close competition from Flavio and Ederson, maybe that can be the catalyst for some great performances.

To protect the goalkeeper, we need an outstanding defence, and despite being only very young, this kid will give us what we need. Joaquim Monteiro impressed dramatically last season. Partnering with either Tero or Duque, this kid is the main defender, and has been tracked by Liga Zon Sagres side Moreirense lately.

The other person that will strengthen our defense is starlet Joao Paulo Pinto. Spanish side C.D Xerez were tracking him in the off season and he publicly stated his desire to leave but I promised promotion, and I am hoping he can help us do that. Very strong at defending, reads the game amazingly, and can score a goal or two, he is our own little Ashley Cole!

Now I go into midfield. In our group we have an outstanding amount of gifted players. We added to the central midfield department but the person that will always remain is that man Sufrim. Player of the season in my first season, his work rate, tackle and eye for goal have given us that edge against sides. He may be in his thirties, but I will still be relying on him this season.

In preseason I sold Rodrigo Antonio, one of the icons of the club, who gave the fans lots of goals and fantastic pieces of play. This was possibly the biggest task of my summer: find a replacement for the irreplaceable. Well, I think I actually did. Filipe Oliveira worked a treat inside the squad and has settled and gelled so quickly. And at the age he is, I can see him working wonders with our new striker. Goals and assists are likely to be in double figures with this guy.

The final piece of the puzzle. My striker. I actually started this deal at the end of the year, and bought him for a free because of his expiring contract, and what a steal he will prove to be! Marco Margarca is a goal machine! He did not stop scoring in pre season and I hope it continues in the league! Naval de Maio must be feeling very sorry they let this kid go, because he has enormous potential!

These players will be the keys to promotion this season. Of course there are others, but I think these people can make the biggest impact. We will see them in competitive action for the first time in the Taca de Liga and hopefully we can grab a couple of wins!

With a tweak in the tactics, hopefully these players can grow accustomed to the way we play the game. The worst thing happening is signings not gelling. We must make sure this isn't an issue. Most of the signings are young and still have room to improve, meaning we can be better in the next couple of years without spending extra money on transfers.

One way to speed up the process is better coaches, and we signed some of those in the offseason too. We were going to undergo a heavy training schedule to see that our players were getting the maximum result, instead of resting on their contracts. We wanted players who played for the love of the game, not the size of their bank account!
Nice lineup.
