One difference is they are nowhere near winning the Capital One Cup this season and they didn't win a double last season nor finish 5th.

Temptation Once Again
German side Borussia Dortmund has confirmed that they have submitted a formal contract offer to Aston Villa manager David Beckham, after strong rumors in the media that the 41-year-old was first-choice to replace Laurent Blanc at Signal Iduna Park.
Dortmund have suffered in the past two seasons, although they won the Bundesliga title with Robin Dutt in 2014. However, since then, Dortmund have been a shell of their 2011, 2012 and 2014 Bundesliga winning team, having finished in 8th place right after their title win. The season after that, Der BVB finished 5th.
Former France boss Blanc took the job in May 2016 after the sacking of Dutt, but didn't even last a season, sacked with Dortmund hanging in 6th place and nowhere near challenging for the title.
Dortmund chairman Reinhard Rauball has admitted to German media that the club have submitted an offer to Beckham and Aston Villa.
"He's a very promising manager, and if he accepts our offer he is going to be our first ever English manager in Dortmund. If he brings the English style of football over to Germany, it could help us."
Beckham is rumored to be seriously considering the offer. So far this season, Villa have won the Capital One Cup and are in the Semi-Finals and Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup and Europa League respectively. However, they are hovering in 16th place in the Premier League and despite rejecting offers from clubs like Barcelona early in the season, Beckham is said to want a new challenge after remaining loyal to the Villans for over 4 years.
Beckham's Decision
Aston Villa manager David Beckham has broke his silence over speculation linking him to Borussia Dortmund, confirming that a contract offer from the German side had indeed been reviewed.
However, he has also announced his 'decision' - and that is to delay his ultimate choice until the end of the season, a decision Dortmund chairman Reinhard Rauball have agreed to.
"I have to be honest," said Beckham. "It is a very interesting proposal... but I don't want my players to keep thinking about it. I know they all want me to stay, but at the moment we should all be focusing on the cups we are playing in, and the league. I will come to a clear decision at the end of the season. For now, we should be focusing on the current season and a way to improve on our poor league position."
Beckham's family and friends are rumored to want the Villa boss to stay in Birmingham, and that might be counted as a boost for Villa to keep their man.
Meanwhile, Villans chairman Randy Lerner has admitted that Beckham had received "more than three offers" in the month of January.
January was a hectic month in the managerial world, with Beckham's rejection of Barcelona ultimately becoming a game of dominoes. Bayern boss Antonio Conte went to Barcelona in Beckham's place, while Man City manager Rafa Benitez replaced Conte. Liverpool's Michael Laudrup was approached to take Benitez's place on the Etihad Stadium hot seat and the Reds finally broke the game by signing on unemployed manager Frank de Boer.
However, Lerner has now revealed that Bayern, Manchester City and Liverpool's first choices were Beckham, and that the Englishman had rejected all three offers from all three clubs, prompting them to search for other options.
"David has shown a lot of loyalty to us and hopefully he can continue to display this loyalty at the end of the season. I've heard of his decision and I really cannot blame him if he decides to leave because he has done so much for us, but I hope he knows that all of us here, the fans, the board, the players, we all want him to stay."
That really is a tough deciscion, just like the other offers, I don't know if I would stay or leave. At least you have the rest of the season to decide.

This is even more interesting now. Will he stay or will he go? Please stay, wouldn't mind either way, but Villa winning the premier league, wouldn't mind seeing that.
