Champions League Quarter Final Draw 2020
The Champions League Quarter Final draws have been complete, with the eight remaining teams in Europe's top competition facing each other.
The drawing was done by former Barcelona captain and legend
Carles Puyol.
Liverpool and Aston Villa were the first two teams drawn out of the hat. Liverpool are competing in their first Champions League tournament since 2009, and the Reds have done well so far, breezing past their group and beating Scottish champions Celtic in the First Knockout Round.
Aston Villa thrashed Dutch club FC Twente to advance and both sides are familiar with each other, with Liverpool and Villa clashing regularly in the Premier League on a regular basis. Both squads are rather evenly matched and it will be interesting to see which one of the clubs pull off a victory.
The next draw featured another all-English team, with Champions League holders Arsenal squaring off against Manchester United.
While Arsenal had it easy against the likes of Galatasaray, whom they crushed in the First Knockout Round, Manchester United faced in-form Schalke, and barely managed to scrape a win against the German giants.
Gunners manager
Mauricio Pochettino has won plenty in his 4 years as manager of the North London side, but something he has frequently failed to conquer is Manchester United and his counterpart at Old Trafford,
Jose Mourinho. The two head coaches also share a mutual dislike of one another and their reputable feud will make this fixutre all the more interesting.
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid featured in a mouthwatering draw. Real Madrid overcame Sampdoria in the First Knockout Round, while Bayern Munich defeated Real's rivals Atletico Madrid.
Bayern, currently unbeatable in 28 Bundesliga league games, have confirmed their league title following Dortmund's loss against Schalke earlier this month. Under
David Beckham, Die Bayern have been a dominant force, working their way back up the ranks of Europe's top clubs after
Rafa Benitez kicked them down low with his poor performances as manager.
Real are in a more unfortunate situation. Only 19 wins in 30 La Liga games haven't helped their title bid and they sit in 3rd place in the Spanish league, under Barcelona and Atletico. However, their world class squad is not to be underestimated. The likes of
Raphael Varane and
Mateo Kovacic can cause troubles for any side - even a side sitting 25 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
The last two of the eight clubs drawn together were Barcelona and Zenit. Currently the league leaders in their respective national leagues, the two giants will relish the opportunity to play against each other.
Both teams were given tough tasks in their First Knockout Round fixtures, with Barcelona playing Borussia Dortmund and Zenit going up against oil-rich Paris Saint-Germain. However, after a shaky first leg where they lost 1-0, Barca hit back to win 3-0 at the Nou Camp. Meanwhile, Zenit shocked footballing fans around the globe as they managed to thrash PSG 6-3 on aggregate.
Although Barcelona is deemed as the obvious favorite, Zenit boasts a squad that includes
Hulk and
Axel Witsel, who are fan favorites after their long years serving the Russian champions. Age has not ceased their importance for Zenit and both Hulk and Witsel will be vital players if Zenit want to get past Barca.
All in all, there are going to be some amazing Quarter Final matches on display, all to be savored by fans of the beautiful game.
