Rally of the Captain

Aston Villa captain Ciaran Clark has called for his teammates to put their best footballing skills on display at the GelreDome stadium tomorrow when his Villa side come up against Bundesliga and European champions Bayern Munich for the right to be named the best team in Europe.

Villa, having won the Europa League last season, will be competing with Champions League winners Bayern to add another trophy to their growing collection - the European Super Cup.

Despite David Beckham's Villa team described as a "sure-lose" by many pundits, Clark believes that the squad has the quality to beat Bayern Munich, managed by successful Italian manager Antonio Conte.

"Bayern have great players like Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger, but we have Carlitos (Fierro) and Welly (Nem). I don't see why we can't put up a fight. Everyone is saying we are sure to lose, but even if we do, we aren't going down without a fight.

"Bayern are one of the top sides in the world right now but so are Aston Villa. It's a bold statement but that's what I truly believe. We have everything it takes to make an upset. It'll be up to the lads tomorrow."

Clark was talking to NUsport, in an interview outside Villa's training ground in Holland before their big match at the GelreDome.
Go on: got this in the bag :P
You know you can do it!, Good Luck!

Europa League: An Easy Group

Europa League holders Aston Villa have found themselves in an easy qualifying group.

David Beckham's side have been drawn with Ukranian Premier League club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk; Maritimo, who play in the Liga ZON Sagres; as well as MSK Zilina from the Slovak Super Liga.

It is a fairly easy group to get out of and the Villans are expected to finish top.

However, Beckham stresses for his players not to underestimate their group opponents.

"On their day, clubs like Dnipro and Maritimo can definitely cause upsets. I do not want any of my players to think they've won it just by looking at the group.

"Dnipro and Maritimo will surely give us a very challenging battle. Zilina have also done very well to reach the group stages and I don't think they will be going down without a fight.

"Of course, we could have been handed a tougher group, but all the teams in this group are all fantastic and underestimating any of them will not be beneficial for us.

"If we kick off a game thinking we've already won it, it would be disastrous."

European Super Cup 2016/17

Gary Neville: Good day, everyone, and welcome to the GelreDome, home to Vitesse, but today it will be hosting the European Super Cup match between Aston Villa and Bayern Munich. Beside me here is former Chelsea and Aston Villa midfielder Frank Lampard.

Frank Lampard: Great to be here, Gary.

Gary Neville: I'm really psyched for this one, it's going to be a good match. Champions League winners versus Europa League winners. Let's take a look at the line-ups.

Aston Villa: Bardi; Nagatomo, Montero, Clark, Romero; Hughes, Gardner, Mattheus; Hacieyupoglu, Nem; Fierro

Bayern Munich: Neuer; Xulu, Heitinga, Lopez; Muller, Kroos, Schweinsteiger, Ramires, Giaccherini, Ramirez, Lukaku

Gary Neville: Summer signing Francesco Bardi starts in goal ahead of Samir Handanovic, his first official game for Aston Villa after Handanovic started Villa's first two Premier League games of the season. Yuto Nagatomo is at right-back as usual with John Romero at left-back. Ciaran Clark in defense will be hoping to lift that Super Cup as captain today, and his partner is Villa's young Uruguayan defender Daniel Montero.

Frank Lampard: With Ron Vlaar just returning from injury, David must not want to risk him to keep him fresh for the upcoming league games.

Gary Neville: Will Hughes, Gary Gardner and Mattheus will form the three-man midfield for Villa today. Fabian Delph is out injured and he'll be a massive miss for Villa but I think they'll cope just fine.

Frank Lampard: The brilliant thing about Villa is if one of the key players get injured, there's always reliable, very reliable backup.

Gary Neville: Right you are on that, Frankie. Wellington Nem will be on the left wing today again and on the right is... what's his name there?

Frank Lampard: Shall we just call him Hacie?

Gary Neville: Yes, that's brilliant. Gokmen Hacie, signed from Galatasaray just a month ago will start on the right wing.

Frank Lampard: I've not seen this lad play much so I'm looking forward to seeing if he impresses.

Gary Neville: Lastly, Carlos Fierro is the man who will lead the assault on Bayern's defense today.

Frank Lampard: Moving on to Bayern Munich, it is Manuel Neuer in between the posts as usual and a three-man defense of Siyanda Xulu, John Heitinga and Lisandro Lopez.

Gary Neville: Lopez shares his name with that other Lisandro Lopez from Lyon, doesn't he?

Frank Lampard: Indeed, Gary. I'm a bit puzzled as to why Xulu is starting though, Per Mertesacker is a better choice, surely?

Gary Neville: Yes, I believe so! More importantly, Lopez is also starting ahead of Bayern's own captain, Philipp Lahm. Antonio Conte has made a lot of surprising decisions for his line-up today.

Frank Lampard: Bayern will start a rich midfield of Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos, captain-of-the-day Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ramires and Emanuele Giaccherini. An extremely strong midfield for Bayern that Aston Villa will find hard to play against. Giaccherini is the weak link among them, though. I personally feel the man over there today should be Gaston Ramirez.

Gary Neville: Speaking of Gaston Ramirez, he is lining up as a striker alongside Romelu Lukaku today. No sign of Fabio Borini, who has had quite a season with Bayern last year.

Frank Lampard: The players are streaming out of the tunnel now, and kick-off is imminent. See you all at the end of the match.

1' - We kick off here at the GelreDome, in line for a spectacular match between Aston Villa and Bayern Munich.

5' - Romelu Lukaku gets the ball from a Giaccherini free kick, and hits it fiercely past Francesco Bardi into the net, but it's ruled off-side!

9' GOAL - Bayern show off their passing ability and eventually Gaston Ramirez plays it to Thomas Muller who places it into the net from a tight angle. A very good goal! Bayern 1-0 up!

43' GOAL - WHAT A GOAL! Villa's Mattheus crosses it in for Daniel Montero in the box but the Uruguayan loses the header to Siyana Xulu. However, Xulu foolishly heads it to Mattheus again, and he gets the ball to Carlos Fierro who strikes it hard past four Bayern Munich players and past Manuel Neuer. Brilliant goal!

45' - HT: Aston Villa 1-1 Bayern Munich. Bayern have been the more dominant side for the majority of the first half but Aston Villa are starting to come out of their shell. Both sides go into the break level and the second half promises to be spectacularly thrilling.

45' - We return to the GelreDome at the end of half-time. John Romero will come off for Ron Vlaar to come on, with Ciaran Clark moving to left-back. Giaccherini also comes off for Mario Gomez at the half-time break.

57' GOAL - A fantastic goal as Muller crosses it from the right to Gaston Ramirez, who in turn crosses in from the left for Romelu Lukaku to power a header past Francesco Bardi.

64' GOAL - Poor marking from Daniel Montero sees Romelu Lukaku easily slip the ball to Mario Gomez who gets free of his markers. Gomez wins his one-on-one with Bardi to put Bayern 3-1 up.

75' - Jack Grealish is coming on for Gokmen Hacie, and Adam Campbell comes on for Carlos Fierro.

88' GOAL - Bayern aren't finished yet as Mario Gomez floats it towards Ramires who makes a dashing run into the Villa box to strike the ball into the net. 4-1 Bayern!

89' - Wellington Nem hits it, and it looks a certain goal! But no, the ball flies just over the Bayern Munich net.

90' - FT: Aston Villa 1-4 Bayern Munich. The Villans seemed to crumble in the second half as Bayern hit back with 3 goals. This will not have done anything to boost their morale for the upcoming season, but credit to Bayern Munich for their fantastic play.

Ramires AND Schweinsteiger in the same team? UNFAIR! Tough luck with the loss :/
